Impatience of the Heart
Impatience of the Heart | Stefan Zweig
The great Austrian writer Stefan Zweig was a master anatomist of the deceitful heart, and Impatience of the Heart, the only novel he published during his lifetime, uncovers the seed of selfishness within even the finest of feelings. Hofmiller, an Austro-Hungarian cavalry officer stationed at the edge of the empire, is invited to a party at the home of a rich local landowner, a world away from the dreary routine of the barracks. The surroundings are glamorous, wine flows freely, and the exhilarated young Hofmiller asks his host's lovely daughter for a dance, only to discover that sickness has left her painfully crippled. It is a minor blunder that will destroy his life, as pity and guilt gradually implicate him in a well-meaning but tragically wrongheaded plot to restore the unhappy invalid to health.

Zweig appreciation post 🥰 “In the 1920s and 1930s Stefan Zweig was an immensely popular writer, a man who had to barricade himself in his house in Salzburg in order to avoid the fans lurking around his property in the hope of waylaying him. According to his publisher, he was the most widely translated author in the world. Today, while he is still read in Germany and also in France, his name is barely known to the average Anglophone reader.” 💕

5⭐️ An absolute perfection from Zweig! I call this novel “the book of emotional conflicts” 😅 as Zweig shares his insights into human nature through the depiction of pity. I love how he describes the thoughts and feelings of the characters (especially Hofmiller) so comprehensibly. I wonder if he had a lively discussion with Freud on this topic 🥸

Taking a break from War and Peace, and started this book. I love Zweig 💕 and I‘m eager to find out what this book is all about. The title itself is intriguing

This book! If you ever find yourself pitying someone - which is just another form of condescension (tbh) - stop and think about what you're doing. Better yet, read this book. Never has anyone explained so beautifully the true consequences of pity.

The characters are very well sketched - they evoke very strong emotions and you really feel the dread rising as the novel reaches its inevitable end.

A must read! Absolutely brilliant!

A young Austrian officer befriends a local millionaire and his family, but in particular the man's crippled daughter, Edith, for whom he feels sorry. The consequences are terrible.
But there is so much more to the story. As always, Zweigs‘ plot unfolds through things left unsaid, situations misread.
The only possible downside to this book is that it would be even more powerful if he‘d written it as a novella.

#WeeklyForecast 45/19

A new month means another 50 pages of Proust - like I‘ve been doing since 2017. This is the last book in the series but it‘ll take months to finish it.
I just started the tagged book. Zweig is becoming a favorite author.
Next will be a shorty for the #1001books list, The Glass Bees.
I guess that will be it for this week but just in case, I added the next one for the #ReadingUSA2019 challenge, We are Called to Rise.

Cinfhen I‘m guessing that‘s your Nevada pick 5y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Yes! Weren‘t you the one who suggested it? 5y
Cinfhen I think so 😬🤞🏼🤞🏼 5y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen Its premise looks great! I hope I‘ll get to it this wel but that may be a bit too ambitious 😉 5y

LibrarianRyan If you saw my last note please ignore it. I got my swaps mixed up. I have not received anything yet (though I‘m not home). If mine is one of the missing it does NOT need to be replaced. Your mental health and frustrations are more important than a box will ever be. 5y

Gissy I still haven't received the box of #AllHallowsReadSwap but don't worry maybe something happened to the person or the box in the delivery process. Things happen and we have to understand. I still enjoyed the activity and I will participate next year again🤗🎃🖤🖤🖤🖤 5y

KatieDid927 @MaleficentBookDragon Yes, sorry. I‘ve been in a bad place emotionally so I haven‘t been posting or active on social media at all. But I received it, thanks! 5y

#QuotsyJuly18 Day 18: When one perceives one‘s self with #Disgust, and not deserving of love, then life will be very sad indeed.

Aimeesue That is one of the saddest sentences I have ever read. Every human being is worthy of dignity and respect, even from oneself. 🙁 6y
GatheringBooks @Aimeesue agreed. even more heartbreaking if it is part of one‘s self-definition. 6y

I have been particularly tardy with my book posts over the last few months. I finished this one long before Christmas but it‘s a great book. I enjoyed it for its creeping sense of dread and “OH NO YOU DIDN‘T” moments.

Just finished watching Beware of Pity. Absolutely incredible. So fraught and raw there were times I could hardly bear to watch. I only wish I spoke German so that I didn't need to rely on the subtitles. I recommend it to everyone. Here's that link again, just in case 😉 http://www.pushkinpress.com/beware-of-pity-watch-it-live/

I absolutely adored this book. It was dark, melancholy, beautiful, and deeply unsettling. Finished it over a week ago, and still thinking of it nearly everyday. I need to buy my own copy, since this is a book I'll definitely be rereading.

Read this book in one of my book clubs last year and I liked it very much. A great period book that explores human feelings and how decisions based on them can change our lives and that of those around us drastically.

I've yet to read a Stefan Zweig book that didn't make me look at humanity differently, if only for a moment.

Trav This is one of my favourite books. An absolute masterpiece. 8y
