James Baldwin
James Baldwin: A Biography | David Leeming
11 posts | 5 read | 1 reading | 13 to read
James Baldwin was one of the great writers of the last century. In works that have become part of the American canonGo Tell It on a Mountain, Giovannis Room, Another Country, The Fire Next Time, and The Evidence of Things Not Seenhe explored issues of race and racism in America, class distinction, and sexual difference. A gay, African American writer who was born in Harlem, he found the freedom to express himself living in exile in Paris. When he returned to America to cover the Civil Rights movement, he became an activist and controversial spokesman for the movement, writing books that became bestsellers and made him a celebrity, landing him on the cover of Time. In this biography, which Library Journal called indispensable, David Leeming creates an intimate portrait of a complex, troubled, driven, and brilliant man. He plumbs every aspect of Baldwins life: his relationships with the unknown and the famous, including painter Beauford Delaney, Richard Wright, Lorraine Hansberry, Marlon Brando, Harry Belafonte, Lena Horne, and childhood friend Richard Avedon; his expatriate years in France and Turkey; his gift for compassion and love; the public pressures that overwhelmed his quest for happiness, and his passionate battle for black identity, racial justice, and to end the racial nightmare and achieve our country.

Litsy does not have the book in database - what I read was Memorable Quotations of James Baldwin; a compilation of significant quotes from his novels and essays. I like it bc the quotes stand out in this format and are a window into his writing soul.

I felt I had finally read enough of Baldwin's work that I was "allowed" to read a biography. Leeming's book is an excellent read, and I will continue forward with my Baldwin reading now.

An energetic figure addicted to change, and adverse to safety, always hovering on the brink of anarchy, he was also a powerful writer of the Civil Rights era and openly bisexual. Leeming met and became close to Baldwin in the mid-1960‘s and remained one his many friends. A little bit of detail-overload, but this was a good prep for me as I plan to spend the rest of the year reading Baldwin‘s works.

merelybookish What a great project! 6y

“He declared... I must understand that disorder was in a sense a necessary aspect of his life as a writer. He could not afford to be tamed.”

Is it just my mood or is this brilliant? The quote is taken from Giovanni‘s room.

SqueakyChu Did you read Giovanni‘s Room? If not, it‘s well worth reading. 6y
jmofo 💗💜 I admire this man‘s sensitivity and intelligence so much. I‘m so happy you‘re reading his stuff this year. 6y
Graywacke @SqueakyChu will get there - well I hope. It my main goal for this year. 6y

Graywacke @jmofo it‘s nice to hear that. I‘m like...don‘t have the right word, but really excited to get to his writing. More than I usually am with these plans. 6y
CarolynM I think it's brilliant too 6y
jmofo @Graywacke he‘s also an amazing speaker. There‘s quite a lot of video online of him on talk shows and in interviews and speaking engagements. I‘m a total mess when I talk but he‘s charming and clear and honest and he doesn‘t back down while being an peerless example of polite comportment. He was a rare kind of human. 6y
Graywacke @CarolynM ✋ 👍 🙂 6y
Graywacke @jmofo I will look this up. Good suggestion! 6y
batsy Wow. So much packed into that passage. 6y
Graywacke @batsy so true.👍 6y

“Considered in the broad perspective, November 11, 1948, was the day that finally set the course for a violent lifelong conflict that had been brewing within James Baldwin during his first twenty-four years, the conflict between the high school writer and the boy preacher, the relentless prophet-spokesman and the reclusive aesthete who longed for enduring love. ... 👇👇

Graywacke This was an inner struggle that surfaced in nearly every conversation he ever had and in every piece he ever wrote. “ 6y
Graywacke I‘m really ready to put this aside and start reading Baldwin‘s writing. 6y

Theme one for 2019 - James Baldwin. I'm starting with this biography and then two books I just bought: Early Novels and Stories and Collected Essays. Both of those are edited by Toni Morrison.

Mom and I finally watched I Am Not Your Negro and it is so obvious how brilliant and passionate and uncompromising this man was. Baldwin‘s words ring so true, even now. Discussing our mutual shame at having never read any of his works, we vowed to change that in 2018. We ordered this critically acclaimed biography of Baldwin along with several of his works.

Tamra I see that it‘s streaming on PBS, but only thru 1/30, at least here anyway. I‘ve only read a couple of his books and they are good, but tough! 7y
Buddys_Momma @Tamra We watched it on PBS on MLK Day. I get the sense that his writing is very deep!! 7y
