How We Fight White Supremacy
How We Fight White Supremacy: A Field Guide to Black Resistance | Akiba Solomon, Kenrya Rankin
7 posts | 3 read | 24 to read
A celebration of Black resistance and leadership in all its varied forms, offering a blueprint for what the fight for freedom and justice looks like -- and how each of us can contribute.Americans today are facing unprecedented attacks on our democracy, our privacy, women's rights, and civil rights. If you're Black in America, this is not new. As Colorlines editors Akiba Solomon and Kenrya Rankin show, African Americans subvert and resist life-threatening forces as a matter of course. This book features essays, cartoons, and interviews with leading organizers, artists, journalists, comedians, athletes, and filmmakers on how they fight white supremacy. Contributors include Ta-Nehisi Coates, Robin DG Kelley, Harry Belafonte, Damon Young, Lonnie G. Bunch III, Marc Lamont Hill, and Black Lives Matter co-founders Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi, and many others. Together, these contributions show how resistance work can be done through scathing, humorous pop culture writing; through traditional political organizing; by making antiracist, feminist art or movies; or through religion. And most importantly, this difficult work can also be joyous and affirming, a rewarding part of our everyday lives. This is a must-read for the newly politicized and for the next generation of leaders building a better future.

It's #BlitsyHistoryMonthSwap day! I had so much fun opening my goodies, and I'm pumped to dig into these anthologies. @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego you're the best. I loooove everything. This is my first ever book sleeve, and I don't know how I've existed without one. Big hugs also to @Chelleo for making this year's swap international. #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackHistoryMonthSwap #BHMS #BHMSwap

Such a fascinating collection of stories, theory, memoir, everything. It brought so much together from famous writers and artists to marketing executives, some tragic some laugh out loud funny, some stuff I‘d never even thought of as a topic to be written about before. It made me intensely uncomfortable at times but I crave that feeling from books about racism, it feels like knowing the medicine I‘m taking to open up my mind is working.

#weekendreads @rachelsbrittain

1. Tagged book, Disappearing Earth and Afropean

2. Probably one of the above, not sure which!

3. Keeping reading through a year with a lot of changes in it for me, moving flat was a lot and it caused a bit of a slump but I‘ve picked back up. I read less than last year but did manage my goodreads goal, admittedly after I revised it down

I can easily recommend this. It is a plethora of different opinions about what it is to fight white supremacy told in different forms: essays, lyrics, poems, song short stories. The book is separatedinto different themes with Solomon and Rankins thoughts at the end of each section. It‘s well done. Well curated. It makes you reflect on your actions in this time and space.
Thanks Netgalley for this book in exchange for an honest review.

Reading this book now and it‘s interesting, in that it‘s not a collection of one thing. There are interviews, poetry, short stories and essays all about how we fight supremacy and how it prevails in society. I‘m enjoying it so far. I‘m liking that‘s it not a singular entity because we all fight and exist in different ways. #arc
