The Wild Book
The Wild Book | Juan Villoro
6 posts | 6 read | 14 to read
We walked toward the part of the library where the air smelled as if it had been interred for years.. Finally, we got to the hallway where the wooden floor was the creakiest, and we sensed a strange whiff of excitement and fear. It smelled like a creature from a bygone time. It smelled like a dragon. Thirteen-year-old Juans favorite things in the world are koalas, eating roast chicken, and the summer-time. This summer, though, is off to a terrible start. First, Juans parents separate and his dad goes to Paris. Then, as if that wasnt horrible enough, Juan is sent away to his strange Uncle Titos house for the entire break! Uncle Tito is really odd: he has zigzag eyebrows; drinks ten cups of smoky tea a day; and lives inside a huge, mysterious library. One day, while Juan is exploring the library, he notices something inexplicable and rushes to tell Uncle Tito. The books moved! His uncle drinks all his tea in one gulp and, sputtering, lets his nephew in on a secret: Juan is a Princeps Readerwhich means books respond magically to himand hes the only person capable of finding the elusive, never-before-read Wild Book. Juan teams up with his new friend Catalina and his little sister, and together they delve through books that scuttle from one shelf to the next, topple over unexpectedly, or even disappear altogether to find The Wild Book and discover its secret. But will they find it before the wicked, story-stealing Pirate Book does?

#NewYearNewBooks Day 29: #InvolvesPoison - this book takes the reader to the realm of the marvelous and the strange, what with books moving of their own free will, or the presence of malignant books that poison other books - #InvolvesPoison- around them, not to mention a wild book that will only make itself visible to the right reader, under the right circumstances. A super fun middle grade adventure about books! It was fun seeing character relationships grow, and reading about all of the book shenanigans. I also enjoyed that the uncle seems neurodivergent, based on the things he enjoys and the particular things he can‘t stand (like when the phone rings it utterly disrupts his entire day and feels like the loudest sound ever). #BooksAboutBooks #MiddleGrade #Adventure #NeuroDiversity

This was a fun adventure about books! My favorite topic🥰 Juan spends the summer with his eccentric uncle who lives in a unique library where the books have a mind of their own. The plot was unique and I enjoyed watching Juan reconnect with his family after struggling to accept his parent‘s divorce. The ending was very sweet as well. My only complaint is the way Indigenous people were stereotypically portrayed (in Juan‘s favorite book series).

I know this is a middle grade book but oh my, I absolutely adore it. It captures the love of books and how they have a different meaning to each reader. It is so full of marvellous descriptions that I could write a whole post just using quotes…it is truly special and with its magic, will appeal to book lovers everywhere and of all ages.

Here are my picks for #LMBC. Any that strike your fancy? @Johanna414 @LibrarianRyan @IndoorDame

See All 11 Comments
Johanna414 Oh I haven‘t read any of these! And they all sound really good! If I had to vote, maybe Diary from the Edge, Ghost Road or Withering-by-Sea? 5y
IndoorDame I agree. These all look great, and they‘re all new to me! I‘d probably vote for diary from the edge, withering by the sea or fog magic, but honestly I‘d be happy reading any of them. 5y
LibrarianRyan I think I‘m the 3rd to say diary at the end of the world. 5y
merelybookish @IndoorDame @Johanna414 @LibrarianRyan Okay! My Diary from the Edge of the World it is! I'm excited by our picks so far! Also, I haven't don't #lmbc in a while. Do we read our own pick first or last? And do we exchange emails or does @suvata do that? 5y
Johanna414 @merelybookish @suvata will send out an email with everyone‘s info once sign ups are complete. We each read our own book in July and then start the rotation. 5y
merelybookish @Johanna414 Great! Thanks! 5y
