Two little girls are taken by their mother to Morocco on a 1960s pilgrimage of self-discovery. For Mum it is not just an escape from the grinding conventions of English life but a quest for personal fulfilment; her children, however, seek something more solid and stable amidst the shifting desert sands. ‘Just open the book and begin, and instantly you will be first of all charmed, then intrigued and finally moved by this fascinating story’ Spectator.

It‘s been a wonderful Thanksgiving week, and tonight I‘m thankful for a quiet evening with good food and a book. This book‘s been on my list for a bit, and I finally started it today. So far, other than not particularly liking the narrator‘s mother, I‘m enjoying it and the descriptions of Morocco.

Daisey Well, maybe I should have waited to post as I decided to just go ahead and read the rest of this book tonight. It‘s an interesting perspective, watching the mother‘s actions and seeing the journey through a child‘s eyes. I often disliked the mother‘s choices, but I thoroughly enjoyed the tour of Morocco. 2y

Another hippie journey that I had to read just in case I don‘t actually make it to Morocco.

Despite the horrible cover and title, I loved this book. Told from a five year old‘s perspective, it tells the story of a selfish young mother who drags her kids with her on a spiritual journey to Marrakech. Their cultural experiences there are interesting and it‘s just a really well written book. #1001books

Easy read of a child and her sister being a bit neglected by their restless mother who keeps looking for adventure. She takes her children to Marrakech, where they live on hardly any money and the mother wants to become a Sufi. The children don't go to school and live their lives happily in whatever place their mother takes them to.

Interesting read with great descriptions of one of my favourite countries. Not Freud's best though. #1001books
