Boomerang: Travels in the New Third World
Boomerang: Travels in the New Third World | Michael Lewis
The author of The Big Short describes the effect that the bubble of cheap credit readily available to almost anyone between 2002 and 2008 had on countries beside the U.S., including Iceland, Greece and Germany. 200,000 first printing.

This book was a super easy, fast and fun read. Especially for a nonfiction book!

This was a very biased, honest look at cultures and a very good explanation of the global financial crises. I learned a lot in a very entertaining way.

#payingitforward #librarydonations #timetoletgo I've decided I'm not going to read these books, and hubby has, sons 1 & 2 are pretty ambivalent so I'm setting them free💜 I mean to hold onto them just for photo challenges seemed cruel 😐

Librariana The hubby and I are having similar chats about downsizing and donating... 8y
LeahBergen I love culling my books. I'm always taking mine to trade-in at my local used bookshop or else donating them. I've found a couple of Little Free Libraries close to me that I like to top up every once in a while, too. 😄 8y
Kalalalatja I hate giving away my books (sorry). I just feel like they are a part of me somehow 😳 but I get it, if you aren't going to read them, it is way better to give them away, so someone else might enjoy them 👍 8y

Cinfhen I get how you feel @Kalalalatja but I know these books are NEVER going to get read in my house so off to a better place 8y
Cinfhen @LeahBergen @librariana More shelf space!!!! The Jobs book was a chunker!!! 8y
Librariana @Cinfhen - my husband just likes to gently remind me that when it comes time to move, books are heavy ? So I like to do the whole "bring in a book, take out a book" or! Just weed from time to time. No sense in holding on to titles I don't plan to re-read ? 8y
BestOfFates Good for you!! 8y
Reviewsbylola I set Mischoing free the other night. 😂 I couldn't even wait for my mom's LFL so I walked it down the block to the one by my house. 😂😂 8y
Born.A.Reader I've always had a hard time sifting through my books to donate, I suppose because I've taken the time and decision to bring them home, and the deciding not to read them seems like an insult. I don't know lol is that weird? I'm better at it now though. 8y
Cinfhen Poor Mischling ☹️it wasn't that bad!!!! @Reviewsbylola 8y
Cinfhen I totally understand @Born.A.Reader but now that I have limited space, I'm pretty good at clearing out space😜 8y
LauraBeth I think I need to go ahead and admit I'm never going to read that Steve Jobs bio either 😀 8y
Born.A.Reader @Cinfhen You would think it would be even easier for me as I really only have a couple bookcases to play with, but I just get more creative at adding more books! 😂😂 8y
Reviewsbylola It was for me. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 8y
Cinfhen @Born.A.Reader clever girl you are!!! 🙌🏻 @LauraBeth #SetSteveFree 8y
saresmoore I just spotted the Steve Jobs book at MY library for sale! Ha! 8y
Cinfhen Hahaha 😂😂😂 @saresmoore I guess it's a real movement #SetSteveFree 8y

Book 2/150 for 2017. 3.5/5 ⭐️. A good, but somewhat dated, read about the 2008 financial crisis. Lewis is strongest early on in the chapters about European countries involved in the crisis (I'd give that section 4 stars), but the American section feels slightly tacked on, as if the publisher said "Americans won't buy this unless you relate it to our experiences, too!" Worth the couple of $ I spent, but too dated in 2017 to buy new at full price.

GlitteryOtters As I stated in my earlier blurb, I'd suggest reading a paper or ebook of this title, if you find it of interest. The audio narrator doesn't do a very good job reading the author's sense of humor--he narrates it like he's reading a Dave Barry book as it would be if written by Nicholas Sparks. He reads in a smarmy & mugging at the audience manner when, in actuality, the author has a dry sense of humor that requires a much different delivery style. (edited) 8y
Texreader That sounds like such a disappointing audio experience!! 8y

I'm an hour and ten minutes into this book & my thoughts so far are: 1) Im glad I chose it, I like the way Michael Lewis looks at things (BTW, if you ever get a chance to hear him speak or read at a book signing, do it. He's one of the best authors I've heard speak, along with Laurie Halse Anderson & Thomas Lynch) & 2) I wish I hadn't bought this on audio. I dislike the narrator's smug, self satisfied tone (Michael himself would have been better).

Cinfhen Just got this one from a friend swap 😊 8y

A slightly dated but still informative investigation of the global financial crisis from a sovereign viewpoint - what lead so many European countries to get so far into debt and how the national characteristics of these countries exacerbated these issues.
