The Story of the British Isles in 100 Places
The Story of the British Isles in 100 Places | Neil Oliver
4 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
"Everyone should have two copies - one for the car and one for the house to plan journeys. . . a reminder to think more about the places you pass and less about your route, because every British journey is through rich history." (Edward Stourton) From much-loved historian Neil Oliver, comes this beautifully written, kaleidoscopic history of a place with a story like no other. The British Isles, this archipelago of islands, is to Neil Oliver the best place in the world. From north to south, east to west it cradles astonishing beauty. The human story here is a million years old, and counting. But the tolerant, easygoing peace we enjoy has been hard won. We have made and known the best and worst of times. We have been hero and villain and all else in between, and we have learned some lessons. The Story of the British Isles in 100 Places is Neils very personal account of what makes these islands so special, told through the places that have witnessed the unfolding of our history. Beginning with footprints made in the sand by humankinds earliest ancestors, he takes us via Romans and Vikings, the flowering of religion, through civil war, industrial revolution and two world wars. From windswept headlands to battlefields, ancient trees to magnificent cathedrals, each of his destinations is a place where, somehow, the spirit of the past seems to linger.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.
This is day 130

My best friend surprised me with the book of the show we saw a couple of nights ago. She addressed it to 'Red Lorry Yellow Lorry' and confused the hell out of both me and the delivery man. And that is why we are best friends.
Bonus picture: that is a picture of 2 women in 1959 East Germany. They are the spitting image of me and my friend, down to the smiles and build.

toric Omg!! That is completely you and sarah! Its perfect. And what a kind thing for her to do! She's a sweetheart ❤❤❤ 6y
laurieluna @toric I know! Really wanted a copy on the night to get signed but £25 was just too much. I have photos of me pulling that exact pose and smile. I honestly accused her if photoshopping when I first saw it! 6y
OutsmartYourShelf I went to see that show in October! Really enjoyed it. 6y
laurieluna @Deangirl It was great! Over ran a little as he tried to cover all 100 places. He just skimmed over a lot which is why I wanted the book. Itching to get to it! 6y
