Richardson‘s stream of consciousness writing brings lack of dental care to life; eating bread:
‘But here every slice seemed better than the last. When she began at the hard thick edge there always seemed to be tender places on her gums, her three hollow teeth were uneasy and she had to get through worrying thoughts about them - they would get worse as the years went by, and the little places in front would grow big and painful and disfiguring.‘
I read most of this camped out in the kitchen while painters were at work in the main room of my studio. So not the best circumstances in which to focus.
The novel continues to be charming and I very much identify with Miriam's bouts of insecurity and introversion. Set in a girls school in a London suburb, I felt the author and the narrator found this time in her life less interesting and thus it was less interesting to the reader.
