Straight Outta Crawley: Memoirs of a Distinctly Average Human Being | Romesh Ranganathan
6 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER Straight Outta Crawley is the hilarious and irreverent autobiography from comedian Romesh Ranganathan. At the age of 9, Romesh Ranganathan delivered his first ever stand-up set at a Pontin's holiday camp talent competition, smashing the other competitor, a young girl playing the kazoo. The gig went so well that Romesh retired his comic genius for twenty-two years, hiding behind the guise of a maths teacher, before finally revealing himself again (no, not like that) at the tender age of 31. In 2010, Ranganathan staged his epic comeback gig to an almost silent room, and has since gone on to earn his place as the most in-demand overweight vegan Sri Lankan comedian in Britain. Now, for the first time, he tells the full story of how he got here. From the delights of Sri Lankan hospitality to his struggles as a child, teacher and now parent, to his adolescent flirtation with a rap career and his attempts to make it in comedy, Straight Outta Crawley is Ranganathan's hilarious and irreverent autobiography.

Much less glamorous finish for this one. Some good laugh out loud moments but not it hung together all that well in parts. He does like a tangent.

Book #4 started most likely will finish in good old blighty. Bit of a change of pace as well.

I can‘t see people reading this who don‘t already know Romesh‘s work. This was good—I read it in a day—but if only it had been published later! It was published in 2018 but too early to include The Ranganation.

Amusing memoir from the British comedian, Romesh Ranganathan. As the author admits in the book, he goes off on tangents, so we get short vignettes about his childhood and his family, but it's mainly about his career transition from teacher to comedian. 3⭐

CW: author is self-deprecating, so there is some body shaming. Examples of racism.

This was a funny read! I like Romesh a lot and he writes like he talks with a healthy dose of sarcasm and a light interesting tone. It‘s a good rambling kind of book, I like the tangents he went off at!

Starting tonight as I love Romesh!! Haven‘t been the best reader lately, too busy looking at interiors magazines to get ideas for my new house (if we ever get to move!!) so it‘s about time I started reading again with something funny!!
