'I loved this beautiful book. It's tender and compassionate, written with exquisite care and verve, and so so SO funny' MARIAN KEYES Professor Chandra is an expert at complex problems. There's just one he can't crack: the secret of happiness In the moments after the bicycle accident, Professor Chandra doesnt see his life flash before his eyes, but his lifes work. Hes just narrowly missed out on the Nobel Prize (again) and even though he knows he should get straight back to his pie charts, his doctor has other ideas. All this work. All this success. All this stress. Its killing him. He needs to take a break, start enjoying himself. In short, says his doctor (who is from California), Professor Chandra should just follow his bliss. He doesnt know it yet, but Professor Chandra is about to embark on the trip of a lifetime.

Chandra Shekhar is a 69-year-old professor of economics who missed the Nobel prize. On a random campus walk, he hits a bicycle and suffers a heart attack. The doctor advises him to take less stress and follow his bliss. Whether he does so or not is revealed in the book. Prof. has two daughters, Jasmine and Radha, and one son, Sunil. He is more inclined toward his elder daughter, Radha. Over time there relationship grew bitter. #autumnplease

Characters were not very likable. I was hoping for A Man Called Ove type book and didn‘t get there. 🤷‍♀️ oh well. Didn‘t finish in time for my book discussion so bailed on this one.

Professor Chandra is a wonderful character — stodgy, flawed, contentious, contemptuous — yet vulnerable, insecure, lonely, repentent, and ridiculous enough to win our sympathy.

Poor Professor Chandra has always been a rigid stickler to a routine in his life. Even after losing out again to the Nobel Prize for economics, he still refuses to make changes. That is until a bicycle accident and a small heart attack finally motivates him to follow his bliss. How does one do so? Well by reconnecting with his adult children who've scattered across the globe to get away from him and to forgive his ex-wife for starters.

Fine diversion. Most of the characters are mildly or moderately unlikable.

3.5🌟
This was a funny read with a great main character! Though a bit quirky and cantankerous I enjoyed the journey he goes on. A slower paced novel, very character driven, full of family drama.

Somehow I fell in love with Professor Chandrasekha--Chandra to most, Charles to his ex-wife, the NOT winner of the Nobel Prize in economics (thus denying him the privilege of being the fifteenth member at his university to claim this title) and charming, fussy, prickly, often confused nearly 70-year old academic who suddenly finds himself forced into taking a sabbatical after an an accident and health scare. I was sad when the book was over.

DGRachel My local indie recommended this to me. I‘m really looking forward to it! 5y
Kleonard @DGRachel I adored it (obviously). I hope you enjoy it as well! 5y

In episode 44 of the Brit Lit Podcast, Rajeev Balasubramanyam talks about his novel PROFESSOR CHANDRA FOLLOWS HIS BLISS, what it was about the academic world that he wanted to explore in it, his meditation practice, why he loves California, and more. https://buff.ly/2Ij0n4K

Thank you NetGalley for a copy of this book. This was such a delightful read, about a man on the cusp of seventy after having an accident decides to take a sabbatical and find his bliss. All the hijinks that go along with and the tender moments he has re-evaluating his relationships with his family are just really good. Really enjoyed this one.

TheNerdyProfessor I just finished this one too! It was a very refreshing read. 6y

If you enjoy "feel good" novels, this one is for you. After a biking accident Professor Chandra begins to engage in some self-examination. He soon discovers that being highly educated doesn't mean you know it all. A timely reminder to enjoy the little things and a nice commentary on family, growth, and what it means to be successful in life. Overall, I enjoyed this one, though usually I shy away from these "happily ever after books" ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5

In the car with my husband for the last 3 hours and trying to find my own bliss despite his road rage 😂 Both of us are control freaks and hate when the other person drives ... Anyone else share this dilemma? 🚗🚦⛽

lahousewyfe I was told I saved a marriage of two people like this by teaching one of them how to knit. Eyes on the work meant eyes off the road. Ahhhhhh! ❤ 6y
Kaye When we go places together I always drive because I like driving. If the Hubster ever makes a comment, I tell him I‘ve been driving for 45 years and have never had a wreck and have always gotten me / him where we need to go, so STIFLE IT. He usually knows better than to pipe up anymore. Men are slow learners, but they catch on after being married 42 years. 6y

Today, I followed my bliss to my favorite place to spend my lunch hour, #parkroadbooks. Picked up my preorder (The Five - hooray for finally giving the victims a voice!!), a #blamebookriot book (If I Loved You Less), a book that‘s been on my radar since last year (Washington Black), and a couple of bookseller recommendations. Oh, and a cute tote bag and cards for #litsylove. I love #PRB and the staff there. ❤️#bookhaul #nofoodlunchhour

TheEllieMo The Five is definitely on my To Read list, the reviews I‘ve read have piqued my interest 6y
Emilymdxn I really enjoyed Washington black! 6y
ShyBookOwl I've had Wasington Black on audio for way too long. Need to read it soon! 6y

This lovely little novel packs a much bigger punch than it's cover, blurb, or title would suggest. It does have the humor and lightheartedness that is implied, but there is some sneaky hidden gems in this one about life, family, self awareness, forgiveness and love. A wonderful book. #netgalley

Book: Professor Chandra Follows His Bliss

Author: Rajeev Balasubramanyam

Five million stars! If I could give this book more than five stars on Goodreads, I would! By page 10, I was chuckling at the humor. I found myself frustrated by characters‘ actions, almost like they were my own family members, and cheering when Professor Chandra had a win. REST OF REVIEW IN COMMENTS 📚 #booksbrewsandbooze #professorchandrafollowshisbliss

booksbrewsandbooze I LOVE this book and know it‘s one I‘ll want to reread, which I can‘t say for every book I enjoy. I also know, when I go to reach for a pen to underline a passage that resonates, that I‘m going to want to keep this book in a prominent place on my bookshelf.
6y
booksbrewsandbooze It‘s lovely to go on this spiritual and familial journey with Professor Chandra and his family members. Life is complicated and families are complicated, but this book gives so much hope that, to quote Gil Scott-Heron, “no matter how far wrong you‘ve gone, you can always turn around.” 6y
booksbrewsandbooze And the ending? No spoilers, but all I have to say to author Rajeev Balasubramanyam is “thank you, thank you, thank you.” 6y

“I could have been so much more,” was a refrain Chandra had heard for years, but he was never sure if his father was referring to his drinking, his widowhood, his failure to become a professional cricketer, or his position within the service. All he knew was that his father was incomplete, a circle three quarters drawn, and it had made him mean.” #professorchandrafollowshisbliss #booksbrewsandbooze #rajeevbalasubramanyam

MaGoose @AsYouWish I think I got my first library card when I was in third grade. By the time I entered the fifth grade, I had already read the entire fifth grade reading list. The children's librarian took me to the adult section and introduced me to a librarian there. This is still a vivid memory for whatever reason. 6y

Mehso-so

Missing out on the Nobel prize pushes the revered Professor Chandra to reassess his life. Divorced, a son who seeks to outshine him, an estranged daughter and a youngest child who just wants Meaning. Whilst I did not love the characters, I appreciated their complexities and efforts to live more harmonious lives. Look beyond the spiritual jargon and economic hyperbole that gets thrown around like ammunition and find a quiet sense of contemplation.
