Gently to Nagasaki: A Spiritual Pilgrimage, an Exploration Both Communal and Intensely Personal
Gently to Nagasaki: A Spiritual Pilgrimage, an Exploration Both Communal and Intensely Personal | Joy Kogawa
1 post | 1 read | 1 to read
Gently to Nagasaki is a spiritual pilgrimage, an exploration both communal and intensely personal. Set in Vancouver and Toronto, the outposts of Slocan and Coaldale, the streets of Nagasaki and the high mountains of Shikoku, Japan, it is also an account of a remarkable life. As a child during WWII, Joy Kogawa was interned with her family and thousands of other Japanese Canadians by the Canadian government. Her acclaimed novel Obasan, based on that experience, brought her literary recognition and played a critical role in the movement for redress. Kogawa knows what it means to be classified as the enemy, and she seeks urgently to get beyond false and dangerous distinctions of us and them. Interweaving the events of her own life with catastrophes like the bombing of Nagasaki and the massacre by the Japanese imperial army at Nanking, she wrestles with essential questions like good and evil, love and hate, rage and forgiveness, determined above all to arrive at her own truths. Poetic and unflinching, this is a longawaited memoir from one of Canada s most distinguished literary elders."

It was amazing to listen to Joy Kogawa at Word On The Street in Lethbridge today. I read Obasan so many years ago and it is a book that has resonated with me for years and years. She is a Canadian icon and a beautifully eloquent speaker. Meeting her was a privilege.

LeahBergen Obasan!! ❤️❤️ Isn't it a shame that Calgary no longer has a Word on the Street festival? 7y
Dragon Sounds like such a cool event! 7y
StaceyKondla @LeahBergen Glad I'm not the only Obasan fan around 😊😊 I am just so grateful I got to meet her. She is 82 yrs old and I can't see her doing events like this forever. I am glad Lethbridge has WOTS. It's an easy road trip and we are spoiled with Wordfest and When Words Collide here in Calgary. It was a nice excuse for an adventure 😊 7y
StaceyKondla @Dragon It was super fun! Maybe there is a WOTS close to you? I know they have them in Vancouver, Saskatoon, Toronto and Halifax 7y
Dragon Thanks I'll have to look into the Vancouver venue next year. 📚🐉 7y
