When You Find Me
When You Find Me: A Novel | P. J. Vernon
13 posts | 12 read | 9 to read
For fans of S. J. Watson and A. S. A. Harrison, comes a chilling look at marriage and madness from a talented new voice in psychological suspense. Her husband is missing. Visiting her familys South Carolina estate, socialite Gray Godfrey wakes from a night out to an empty bed. Her husband Paul is gone and a thrashing hangover has wiped her memory clean. At first, shes relieved for the break from her tumultuous marriage; perhaps Paul just needed some space. But when his car is found abandoned on the highway, Gray must face the truth: Paul is gone. And Gray may not want him found. Her life is unraveling. When a stranger named Annie calls claiming to know Pauls whereabouts, Gray reluctantly accepts her help. But this ally is not what she seems: soon Annie is sending frightening messages and revealing disturbing secrets only Gray could know. As Annies threats escalate and Grays grip on reality begins to slip, the life she thought she had and the dark truth shes been living begin to merge, leaving an unsettling question: What does Annie want? And what will she do to get it? A chilling look at marriage, madness, and the lives we think we lead, When You Find Me is a daring debut from a talented new voice in psychological suspense.

Triggers on sexual abuse of a child. Brutal murder of a cat.

Other than that a scary, suspenseful read.

Very solid. While there are familiar themes, there are some things done particularly well (Gray‘s alcoholism in particular, spot on where some other thrillers don‘t look at anything outside of blackouts and hangovers) and enjoyed that the detective was doing better at following the trail than the drunk woman. Rich people & family secrets add to the twists.

It started off really slow but once it got going I was hooked! And I loved the way the author chose to end the book ❤️ great book for chores and errands 🥰

Another travel audiobook & a pic from Devil‘s Tower.
This book was slow to get started & I didn‘t care about most of the characters. There were some twists which kept me listening.

AlaMich @Ruthiella That‘s the first thing I thought when I saw the photo too. 👽 2y
LiseWorks In Quebec, there is a mountain like this close to Val 'Dor. We called it Le Chadron. Translated means The Cauldron. It's not as big, but it's still cool. 2y

A book I added to my list and checked out because @Alfoster posted about it and a bookmark #handmadeforme by @That-Bookish-Hiker (I think??) for the late, lamented #whodunitbymail endeavor. As you can see, this one has also been much used.

Move over Crawdads, this is the next best southern thriller! The way Gray‘s mother treated her like a child drove me nuts. I raced through this book, needing to know what happened. I thought I figured it out but am glad I didn‘t because it made it so much better. Southern murder mystery full of old and new politics and old skeletons that came to light. I don‘t want to spoil the ending but oh my gosh, just wait for this ending!!Book #49 in 2021

Another great thriller by author of The Bath Haus! Paul disappears one night but wife, Gray was drunk and doesn‘t remember much. Deeply buried family secrets, infidelity, and a solid police investigation. Chilling, twisted, and dark but that‘s how I like my thrillers!

Guys! If you listen to Get Booked, the first question this week was from me! I‘m still on my quest to read a mystery set in every state. Thanks to the episode, I filled in two more green states. Green is TBR, blue is TBR, and gold is TBR from my bookshelves. Thanks to @kelli7990 I was able to fill in SC. That leaves Oklahoma as the only lonely red state. Suggestions welcome!! Grisham is off the table because I used him for Arkansas. #bookriot

Butterfinger It is one of the best true crime books I have read and it is set in Oklahoma. 4y
kspenmoll What a wonderful idea!!!! Agree with @Butterfinger 4y
DivineDiana Love this challenge! Have you found any from Colorado? Leaving for a trip next week, and love to read a book that is set in the area! Visiting Denver, Boulder and Steamboat Springs. (edited) 4y

Susanita @DivineDiana My book club read a fun cozy by Diane Mott Davidson cozy that‘s set in Colorado. For this list I used a Nevada Barr book that was a little unsettling. 4y
Susanita @DivineDiana I haven‘t read this yet but it‘s on my TBR and I‘ve heard good things about it. 4y
SamAnne Jess Walter has two or three mysteries set in Spokane. I think Over Tumbled Graves is the first. I remember loving them. But I‘m from Spokane. 4y
DivineDiana @Susanita Thank you so much! I just borrowed Descent! Sounds good! (edited) 4y

You will understand the book title when you get to the end. Lots of twists that are very slowly untangled. You will enjoy- I did.

CouronneDhiver Probably way more true than you think! 6y
AmyG Very very true. Where I lived in NJ, a few had huge houses and tou‘d walk inside and there would be little to no furniture. 😳 6y
Cpg Yep! True sometimes!!! My girls growing up would say “so and so is so well off”- and this and that- and I would have to reply- well it may be all charged and mortgaged too! Of course the kids had no idea what that meant!!! 😈 Many living outside their means! 🤭🤫😬 6y

Pelican71 I said Amen out loud when I read this. People living in neighborhoods that they can‘t afford or driving specific cars for show. We try to live within our means. I tutor after school for my extra money aka book 💰 😁 @Cpg @AmyG @CouronneDhiver 6y
CouronneDhiver I‘ve been guilty of that in the past... had to learn the hard way. I‘ve heard it said “you get into debt by the shovel-full but you dig out by a teaspoon” 6y
Cpg CouronneDhiver isn‘t that the truth??? 😆😆😆 And I just “didn‘t” win the huge lottery last night in Georgia!!! Bummer!!! 😬 6y
Pelican71 So true @CouronneDhiver Needless to say I won‘t be building my dream library/sitting room anytime soon @Cpg 6y
Cpg @Pelican71 I hear ya!!! 🤦🏼‍♀️ 6y
