Josie always liked visiting her grandmother in the countryside. But when her mother loses her job in the city and they're forced to relocate along with Josie's sister, Annie, she realizes she doesn't like the country that much. Especially because Grandma Jeannie has some strange rules: Don't bring any dolls into the house. And never, ever go near the house in the woods behind their yard. Soon, though, Josie manages to make friendds with the most popular girl in the sixth grade, Vanessa. When Vanessa eventually invites Josie back to her house to hang out, Hosie doesn't question it. Not even when Vanessa takes her into the woods, and down an old dirt road, toward the very house Grandma Jeannie had warned her about. As Josie gets caught up in her illicit friendship with Vanessa, Annie is caught in the crossfire. What follows is a chilling tale of dark magic, friendship, and some very creepy dolls.

I don't have a scary section in the library because kids will check out the books to show off and not read. I try not to police their choices too much. But I needed a better spine label. I ended up using Word+Clipart+ayellowhilighter to get this result. And now my to do pile is even bigger. So much labeling!
Again, I won't read anything scary, so here's my spooky contribution for the season.

Book 84🎧
This one didn‘t quite do it for me, but in comparison to the others I‘ve listened too - this was toned down😂
Spooky dolls + Hansel & Gretel🍭🧸

I don‘t understand why this book has such a low rating on Litsy. It‘s definitely MG, but that was obvious going in. It‘s kinda cute, eerie, and good fun. It sorta reminded me of an episode of “Are You Afraid of The Dark?”, so a lot of fun ,nostalgic Halloween feels.

Creepy little MG book about Josie and her family who moved in with her grandmother. It appears that she's got some issues with reality after she gives the girls strange rules about the woods and dolls because Beryl is watching. Josie befriends perfect Vanessa at school but things aren't always what they seem and Grandma isn't so crazy! Dolls are inherently scary so there's a few really weird images but overall a mediocre story that wrapped up fast

This book is about a girl who moves in with her grandmother, herself and her sister must follow three strange rules.
She trys hard to connect with people at her new school, but it doesn't go as planned, her new friend seems pretty sketchy. If you like books that keep you on your toes with thrill and horror this is for you.

MissYaremcio Great summary Ruby! Horror novels are not my cup of tea... Remember to add in all elements of the post next time (you were just missing the tone)! 5y

This was a creepy middle-grade horror novel from Scholastic. Overall, I liked it, but the ending felt a little rushed for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

madamereadsalot1 I just recently heard of this book because my 9 year old son wants to read this. He's a strong reader, enjoys Neil Gaiman and RL Stein, etc. Would this be a good book for him, or wait a while longer? I know it's supposed to be for junior high kids, but is that just reading level or content? 6y
TEArificbooks This was a best seller at the last book fair 6y
Meghan1 @madamereadsalot1 I think he could probably handle this if he can handle Goosebumps. This book is meant for about 4th or 5th grade. It was creepy, for sure, but not really scary. @mdm139 It was at mine, also! 6y
madamereadsalot1 Oh ok! I thought it was meant for older readers. Thank you for the info. I'll have to get it for him! He takes after me, enjoying spooky reads. 😊 6y

A lot of parts of this book reminded me of works by Mary Downing Hahn and Betty Ren Wright. The story was gripping, especially once the real action gets started. While I wasn‘t sure how creepy or scary it would be, I was satisfied by its unnerving factor. The last chapter felt like those last scenes in old horror movies, like Friday the 13th or Carrie. I wasn‘t overly happy with the final chapter, but I imagine that many people would like it.

#Nightmare #BlackCatChallenge @Clwojick
After I showed the promo video for this book, I thought I‘d have nightmares. I think most of my older students were the most enthusiastic about this book. So many of them asked me if I was going to purchase it for the library. I think readers who liked Took might also like this one. I‘m definitely going to give it a read.

LeslieO The video did scare some of my students! 6y
