“What shall we tell you when our world sometimes seems dark and uninviting? What shall we tell you when hateful words that wound and bully are thrown like bricks against a wall, shattering into debris?”
“What shall we tell you when our world sometimes seems dark and uninviting? What shall we tell you when hateful words that wound and bully are thrown like bricks against a wall, shattering into debris?”
This book would be good to piece together with students, this is really helpful in bringing a realistic look to things and is very empowering.
Poetry. “What shall we tell you” - This beautiful collection provides children (and the adults in their lives) this safe space. Authors ask questions, share wisdom and provide support. By doing so, they open the window to talking about these difficult times. Dedicated to “those who advocate for and pursue a just society and basic human rights for all people”

This collection of poems spreads the message to stand up for what is right. This book emphasizes the importance of advocating for those who have a voice but may not be listened to for a variety of reasons. The book includes personal essays, poems, and letters.
“Dedicated to those who advocate for and pursue a just society and basic human rights for all people.“
I believe this book is best intended for upper elementary. This book contains a lot of history and content that I think lower elementary grades would have a hard time understanding. This book allows us to discuss when the world seems bleak, prejudice, and racist. It discusses advocates for social justice and basic human rights.
This book contains an amazing collection of social justice poetry and prose for children. They have gathered thirty authors and nearly that many illustrators for each double-page piece to give those words of inspiration and love and hope. stories within the book are compelling and encouraging. There is an ongoing theme of justice and unconditional love.
“It's true that our roads sometimes got washed out by tears.“
This series of poems is not only a good read but can be used as a resource is the classroom. These poems are designed to lift children up, especially children from marginalized communities during difficult times.
We Rise, We Resist, We Raise Our Voices is written and illustrated by several of the foremost diverse authors and illustrators. Each one of the poems includes so much creativity that lifts up your spirits.
“Each morning when you walk out the door, I want you to ask yourselves- What choice am I going to make today? I want that choice to be kindness.“
I would use this poem in my classroom with elementary students as a way to expose them to poetry aspects within letters. I would also mainly use this poem as a way to convey and expand upon this hopeful and genuine message of kindness. Ask students what being kind looks like, feels like, or sounds like. Encourage students to use literature to teach themselves and others important messages.
“Kindness Is a Choice“ is a beautifully written poem/letter from a mother to her children urging them to be kind. This poem has hints of rhyming within it and carries a slow, soothing rhythm. When I read this poem, I feel a sense of comfort and hope with how the mother conveys her message of kindness to her children. It inspires me to not only follow this message of kindness, but urge others to do the same.
“ please read this poem with your own power and love/ and smile and reread and nod and be angry with resolve..“ This quote describes the premise of this book really well.
This book has a lot of different poem styles which is really interesting for the reader. Each poem also has beautiful illustrations that represent each poem. This book brings a lot of hope and discovery to its readers.
This book is an anthology of poems that reflect love, hope, kindness, justice, peace and so much more. This book covers the darkness of society and yet brings forth brightness and hope.

A diverse group of picture book and middle grade authors share brief essays and poems of encouragement. This wasn‘t quite what I expected but I think it would be beneficial to kids finding the world a confusing or scary place right now.
Perfect for middle graders and adults who live or work with kids, this book has genuinely excellent advice for anyone, especially kids, struggling with the political climate these days. Practical advice and words we just need to hear sometimes all put together in an incredibly artful way. Highly recommended.
If you need a book to get you through #24in48 I suggest this one! The listening experience is unmatched! Listen and enjoy it (but it‘s not a comforting read. I cried. And maybe growled a little.) #weneeddiversebooks @24in48
This is definitely intended for children, which I don‘t know that I fully realized going in. It‘s a nice short audio listen, and it is Beautiful, heartbreaking and inspiring all at once. I think I may listen to it again with my girls.
This is a great audio book to support and promote love and tolerance in children. Poems, essays, and songs. It is only 2 hours long. If you are driving kids to school or ball games, this is a wonderful way to address the societal fear of today in a positive way. A very diverse group of authors.
I think I‘ll start by reading this one.
