Memphis, Martin, and the Mountaintop
Memphis, Martin, and the Mountaintop: The Sanitation Strike of 1968 | Alice Faye Duncan
9 posts | 5 read | 4 to read
This historical fiction picture book for children ages 9-12 presents the story of nine-year-old Lorraine Jackson, who in 1968 witnessed the Memphis sanitation strike--Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s final stand for justice before his assassination--when her father, a sanitation worker, participated in the protest. In February 1968, two African American sanitation workers were killed by unsafe equipment in Memphis, Tennessee. Outraged at the city's refusal to recognize a labor union that would fight for higher pay and safer working conditions, sanitation workers went on strike. The strike lasted two months, during which Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was called to help with the protests. While his presence was greatly inspiring to the community, this unfortunately would be his last stand for justice. He was assassinated in his Memphis hotel the day after delivering his "I've Been to the Mountaintop" sermon in Mason Temple Church. Inspired by the memories of a teacher who participated in the strike as a child, author Alice Faye Duncan reveals the story of the Memphis sanitation strike from the perspective of a young girl with a riveting combination of poetry and prose.

Memphis, Martin and the Mountain top is a HF, PB which would be perfect for a RA during black history month. This book explores the assassination of MLK and the experience as emotions that go along with going on the sanitation strike in Memphis through the eyes of a 9 year old girl. This book is a Coretta Scott King award winner in 2019. Alicefayeduncan.com provides a great teacher resource for discussion questions before and after you read.

DrSpalding There are several Coretta Scott King winners that would work well with this book in a social studies unit, as you mentioned during Black history month or when you were teaching students about historically significant individuals. 5y

This Historical Fiction book is about the Memphis Strike of 1968. It talks about Martin Luther King Jr. and how he struggled for freedom and justice. It is told in the eyes of a little girl who marched in the strike with her mother and father. This book is great for this genre because the story is accurate and authentic to telling Martin's life. It also shows a different point of view in Martin's life, because it is told by a young girl.

I would use this book in my classroom as a read aloud, with activities afterwards. It would be more appropriate for students who are older such as third grade. It talks about the Memphis strike of 1968.

I would use this in my classroom, but of older students maybe second and up only because it is a lengthy book. It talks about real events that occured in the world which is important for children to know because it is something very important to American history.

This is a historical fiction children's book. This book is about people fighting for their freedom and for equal rights, especially MLK. This is a book made from multiple memories of a teacher. She remembers all the rage, fighting, and troubles that this issue brought to African Americans; her daddy marching in protests/rallies. She recalls all this in her book. This book accurately depicts what happened in the real world but adds some fake ideas.

I highly recommend this book. It explores the events of the Memphis Sanitation Strike which led to the murder of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The main character is a woman recounting the events of her childhood and the strike that her father was a part of. Really well written and informative while still appropriate for children!
