Arthur Schnitzler wrote "Reigen" in 1897. It was published in Vienna in 1903, but it was banned by censors a year later. It was not performed publicly as a play until 1920, and its performance was met by moralistic attacks that quickly became anti-Semitic. Schnitzler was condemned as a "Jewish pornographer."
