Bottom of the 33rd
Bottom of the 33rd: Hope and Redemption in Baseball's Longest Game | Dan Barry
9 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
“Bottom of the 33rd is chaw-chewing, sunflower-spitting, pine tar proof that too much baseball is never enough.” —Jane Leavy, author of The Last Boy and Sandy Koufax “What a book—an exquisite exercise in story-telling, democracy and myth-making.” —Colum McCann, winner of the National Book Award for Let The Great World Spin From Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist Dan Barry comes the beautifully recounted story of the longest game in baseball history—a tale celebrating not only the robust intensity of baseball, but the aspirational ideal epitomized by the hard-fighting players of the minor leagues. In the tradition of Moneyball, The Last Hero, and Wicked Good Year, Barry’s Bottom of the 33rd is a reaffirming story of the American Dream finding its greatest expression in timeless contests of the Great American Pastime.

Suet624 I tried reading this book several years ago and got bored. Does it get better? 5y
keithmalek @Suet624 I loved it. I don't know how far into it you got, but I pretty much liked it right from the beginning. 5y
Suet624 I usually like reading about sports and I like the author so I was surprised by my reaction. Maybe it just wasn‘t the right time. 5y

Wade Boggs

quote
keithmalek

He rises from the ground after receiving the shortstop's thumping tag, on his injured foot no less, with his uniform dirty and his red helmet off his head, his pride spilled before him in the dirt. He cannot stay; he must leave. He picks up his helmet and trots off, chastened.

I don't care about sports, but Dan Barry is one of my favorite writers, and this book is pure magic. In 1981, a minor league game lasted 33 innings, the longest in baseball history. Barry masterfully tells the stories of those involved, from the players (which included Wade Boggs and Cal Ripken Jr.) coaches, fans, announcers, and even the bat boy. The players desperately wanted this game to end.

Readers of this book will feel just the opposite.

This is about the longest baseball game ever, between two minor league teams (Pawtucket Red Sox and Rochester Red Wings, who are the teams that feed the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles rosters respectively) in 1981. It was so entertaining and fun to listen to, zeroing in on the game and the players but also zooming out to talk about life in the minor leagues and the business around it. Cal Ripken Jr. played in the game! #audiobook
