Mehso-so

Some great lines (about he industry of Aid, about the western war machine, and how people deal with crises for example) but the story didn't match the rest for me.

It was simple, they bombed us and then sent us well-educated people to look into our mental health needs. There were workshops called ‘Living With Trauma‘ for parents, there was a survey about ‘Traditional Cures in a time of Distress and Disorder‘. Our Camp was the tourist destination for foreign people with good intentions .

BarbaraBB Heavy! But I am intrigued 5y
charl08 @BarbaraBB I'm thinking this would make uncomfortable reading for development professionals. 5y
BarbaraBB That is partly why I would like to read it! In which country is it set? 5y
charl08 @BarbaraBB I think it's unnamed (at least, I've not worked it out yet). 5y
BarbaraBB The author is from Pakistan, I read (and liked) one of his other books: 5y

Sorry for the delay but this is headed your way Carrie!

I'm not entirely sure what I just read lol. Equal parts anti-war satire, social critique, musings on family & dealing with grief, ending with a fever dream of revelations...this book was indeed weird & lacked cohesiveness, but I like weird books! I've heard his non-fiction reads better. He has some powerful 1-liners & I felt some emotion towards the end, so I do see potential! Maybe ⭐️⭐️💫?

CSeydel Ack, I need to get a move on - I‘m still reading 6y
KT1432 @CSeydel I did feel like that one needed a lot of focus to take it all in! 6y

#lmpbc My book is on its way to Jee-sorry for the delay in sending it. Unfortunately, I didn‘t care for it. I think it‘s meant to be an anti-war satirical novel, but it fell utterly flat for me. Wish I had picked a different book. Hopefully, one of the other participants in #GroupW will find something of redeeming value in it. @Jee_HookedOnBookz @lele1432 @CSeydel

arubabookwoman BTW, the background in the photo is the view from the new apartment in downtown Seattle we moved to 2 weeks ago. The 2 buildings are Amazon‘s corporate headquarters. The building under construction is another Amazon building, which my husband was the architect for. We will be able to watch its progress as my husband undergoes his treatment. 6y
KT1432 Oh wow! That's very cool about the building construction. I wish your husband all the best in treatment!! 6y
Liz_M I hope the move went well and that life is less stressful now. Best wishes for a successful treatment. 6y
Jee_HookedOnBookz Looking forward to reading it! Sorry you didn't enjoy it... Hopefully the next one will be better! Also wishing you all the best in your new place! And wowwww so close to Amazon's HQ! 😊👍🏼 6y
Jee_HookedOnBookz @arubabookwoman thank you for mailing the book! Looking forward to reading it :) 6y

Thanks @Andrew65 for letting me participate with a twist - I am hopeless at counting hours read, so I will aim to post the number of books read. I pretty much read all day so there's a chance I will exceed the minimum 24hours anyway. First up, Red Birds by Mohammed Hanif, in which one character so far seems to be a dog called Muff!

LeahBergen Where are you in your world travels now? 😊 6y
AceOnRoam @LeahBergen today we are in Martinique 🌴🌴 6y

The first part of the is a desert survival and refugee tale is told from the different perspectives of Major Ellie, Momo and Mutt.

it seemed to lose its way a little, with Momo‘s family life and details of the war. By the end I was a little lost as things just get weird.

I didn‘t really engage with the characters but I did feel it highlights the absolute futility of war. A clever well written book albeit weird at times.

Major Ellie is a US airman who has ejected from his plane into a desert in Afghanistan.

He comes across Momo, a 15 year old boy,and his dog Mutt, they live in a refugee camp.
