The Body in the Dales
The Body in the Dales | J. R. Ellis
10 posts | 8 read | 6 to read
An unpopular victim. An impossible crime. A murderer on the loose. A body is discovered deep in a cave beneath the Yorkshire Dales. Leading the investigation into the mysterious death are experienced DCI Jim Oldroyd and his partner DS Carter, a newcomer from London. The deceased is Dave Atkins, well known throughout the village but not well liked. While there is no shortage of suspects, the details of the crime leave Oldroyd and Carter stumped. How did Atkins's body end up in such a remote section of the cave? When someone with vital information turns up dead, it becomes clear that whoever is behind the murders will stop at nothing to conceal their tracks. Oldroyd and his team try to uncover the truth, but every answer unearths a new set of questions. And as secrets and lies are exposed within the close-knit community, the mystery becomes deeper, darker and more complex than the caves below.

This was a pretty decent police procedural in Yorkshire. I‘ve been really digging into the British Mystery genre with my last few books. There‘s a few books by authors on the European Mainland that are in my TBR pile I‘ve been holding off on lately, including some new ones. 4⭐️

I am so behind on reviews that I thought I would give a very short blurb for each of these in the series.
The Body in the Dales - a murdered caver was discovered in a strange place in the caves. With too many suspects to consider, it made for a complicated mystery. The Quartet Murders was a tale involving a a priceless Stradivarius violin.DCI Jim Oldroyd is determined to find the murderer- he was at the choral concert, making it personal. 🔽

kspenmoll 🔼The Murder at Redmire Hall finds Oldroyd & his team investigating the murder of Lord Redmire in a locked room. So many red herrings kept me from the surprising end. In all of these books, the lyrical prose about Yorkshire & its terrain created pictures in my mind as if I was actually there. 1y
dabbe Looking at the first title, this song (unfortunately or fortunately) popped into my head: instead of “The Body in the Dales“ to “The Farmer in the Dell.“ 🤩🤣🤗 1y
kspenmoll @dabbe actually appropriate- lots of farms are mentioned in this area😂😂😂 1y

Mehso-so

This book is all tell, no show. It walks the reader through each character's every thought, reaction, and backstory. No matter how minor the character. It became tedious. I didn't guess the resolution of the mystery but neither did I care much.

The 1st book in the Detective Chief Inspector Oldroyd Series set in the Yorkshire Dales. A body is found whilst pot holing, with no Pot Holing equipment & seems impossible to have got the body there. A very intriguing plot. Really enjoyed this book & an interesting group of lead characters are pulled together who I hope to spend more time with. Took a while to get my head round all the characters. These are available free if with Kindle Unlimited.

Andrew65 Happy to recommend. 3rd book finished for #24B4Monday 4y
AlaMich I‘m guessing pot-holing is fixing pot holes, as opposed to creating them? 😉 4y
Andrew65 @AlaMich 🤣🤣🤣 Possibly should have used the word caving instead. 4y
squirrelbrain Thanks Andrew! I realised yesterday that I already have this on Kindle... and it will do nicely for one of the #booked2021 prompts. 4y

I really enjoyed this book. Great lead detective, engaging storyline, wonderful sense of place. All in all an enjoyable mystery without too much darkness. AND, my first #BookSpin is finished!

This is the first in a series. Set in the Yorkshire area of England. New to the police department is Andrew Carter and he is working with the creative Detective Chief Inspector Jim Oldroyd. Everyone in the community hates the victim because he has either cheated them out of money or had an affair with their wives.
I think I have found a new favorite author. Once I finished this book I went straight onto the next in the series.
