Great for younger students trying to balance their emotions.

This book is really special to me because my parents used to read it to me when I was little. It was a book with my name in it so I was really able to relate to it when I was younger. The pictures in this book are amazing because they show all of the thins that are happening in the story. They are painted in a really bright and abstract way. There are so many colors on every page. This book is great to use to talk about what to do when angry.

This book is about a girl named Sophie who gets in a fight with her sister and gets really, REALLY angry. She throws a tantrum and runs away. She walks, cries, listens, feels, and eventually she feels better.

quote

“She feels the breeze blow her hair. She watches the water and the waves. The wide world comforts her.”

I would use this in my classroom to demonstrate that it‘s okay to get angry but when we do we need to learn how to control it and calm our bodies.

When Sophie Gets Angry— Really, Really Angry… by Molly Bang was published in 1999 and was awarded the Caldecott Honors Award in 2000. This picture book is about a little girl who doesn‘t want to share with her sister. It makes her so angry she goes on a long run and climbs to the top of a tree where she can calm herself down. When she is done taking it all in she climbs back down and heads home to her family.

quote
CarlyJohnson

The wide world comforts her.

What comforts you when you are angry?

blurb
CarlyJohnson

In my classroom I would use this to emphasize the idea that different people handle anger in different ways and that it is okay to be angry at times. As a class children could then come up with ways that they could use to make their anger go away.

When Sophie Gets Angry Really, Really Angry is a picture book written and illustrated by Molly Bang. It was published in 1999 and was awarded the Caldecott in 2000. It is filled with bright illustrations that many parents and children can relate to. The character Sophie gets angry, she runs out and climbs her favorite tree to calm down. This book is about how different people handle anger in different ways and how it is okay to get angry.

quote
delaneylabelle23

“oh, is Sophie ever angry now!”

blurb
delaneylabelle23

I like how it shows that some people get really mad but the littlest things cheer them up. Being mad and upset is just temporary. I also loved the illustrations in the book i loved how they illustrated her anger with the red lines.

I like this book for kids. A lot of kids have a hard time controlling their emotions and I think this would be a good read aloud to read to them.

This book was a Caldecott award winner in 2000. It was published in 1999. This book shows a really good depiction of handling anger. I, personally, so similar things to Sophie. Showing children that it is okay to be angry, to take a minute to yourself, and come back afterwards with love is such a great lesson!

“Everything‘s back together again” and Sophie and her whole family are together and coincidently doing a puzzle! I like that it shows that you can get angry and things will go back to normal and people won‘t be upset with you. It‘s a good way to let kids know it‘s okay to feel their feelings.

blurb

This book would be great to use with younger kids as a reminder that we all have feelings and we all have to deal with them. I would like to use it for social emotional learning/ teaching in my own classroom, as well as the others in the “series”.

When Sophie Gets Angry-Really, Really Angry by Molly Bang 2000. Sophie‘s sister and her are playing when all of the sudden, Sophie‘s toy is taken away from her. The book then walks us through how Sophie feels her feeling after getting upset and the ways she calms herself down. The author/ illustrator uses colors to perceive how Sophie‘s feelings are developing throughout. The pages are red when she‘s mad and blue when she‘s calming down. Caldecott

Contemporary MF-RA picture book, Caldecott Award and Charlotte Zolotow Award Winner. A beautifully designed children's book 📖, raw zigzags of color convey a girl's rage in this compassionate volume which proposes what to do when we get Really, Really Angry!! Everyone gets angry 😡, and that's it's okay to get angry, but it's how we deal with that anger & that is the lesson we learn in this storybook. Great read aloud lesson for teaching emotions.

A perfect book for discussing those frustrating and angry emotions, this Caldecott RF read is a must for our primary classrooms! Being able to make those text to world and text to self connections through visual illustrations and flowing text, this book discusses emotions that sometimes go unnoticed or undiscussed.

AlexRobinson A perfect strategy for this text would be S, as students will get to see these emotions they might not quite understand yet in a physical and visual form, furthering their text to self and text to world connections. 4y
AlexRobinson A source that is extremely compatible with this comes from the Prindle Institute website, that not only has Spanish translation opportunities embedded in the website but also has a summary as well as guidelines and questions for philosophical discussion (https://www.prindleinstitute.org/books/when-sophie-gets-angry/). 4y
AlexRobinson UDL‘s covering this text consist of 5.2, 2.1, and 3.1 (using multiple tools for construction and composition, clarify vocabulary and symbols, and activate or supply background knowledge). 4y

AlexRobinson EL strategies that go hand in hand with this lesson would be: 3, 5, 18, 21, and 34 (encourage self talk, teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts, use commands and directions that involve overt student action as in Total Physical Response or TPR, Record your lectures or presentations, especially for new students who have very limited exposure to English, and de-emphasize speed and emphasize accuracy of work). 4y
AlexRobinson Talking about emotions is always emphasized, but I think sometimes we feel worried talking about the “scary” ones like anger and frustration...these are equally as important! We want out students to acknowledge and understand their feelings- ALL of them! #ucflae3414sp21 4y
StephanyNunez I will definitely add this book to my stack because talking about emotions and helping younger children understand them is important. I like that with this book the students can relate and even share times when they felt angry. 4y
ToddSalerno Great resource for social emotional learning. I‘m sure this would be a helpful resource for kids who have anger challenges. I could see this being a helpful resource in the classroom for particular students to help process hard emotions. 4y
AlexRobinson @StephanyNunez I agree! The only way for our students to properly cope with anger and frustration is to talk about it and no ignore it! I would read this with my 2-3 year old class and they were able to not only relate and share their feelings, but use coping skills discussed in the lesson in real life situations! 4y
AlexRobinson @ToddSalerno I couldn‘t agree more! 4y
DrSpalding We saw a wonderful storytelling of this book as well! Excellent book selection and extended discussion about English learner strategies! 4y

This is RF. This book is great for RA. This book received the Notable Children's Books Award. This book is about a young girl getting mad and show how she handle her emotions. After teachers reading the book, they can have a class discussion on how students handle their emotions when they are frustrated.

“When Sophie gets Angry-Really, Really Angry“ by Molly Bang, 2004. Caldecott Honor Award. I love this book and think it's a must have for the classroom. Anger is a big feeling, especially for kids, and this book is a good way to reassure them that that's okay. I also think the illustrations are very neat and use color in a very creative way so the illustrations pop out at you, sort of mimicking how anger makes you feel.

I think that this book teaches a valuable lesson to children who may be experiencing anger sometimes, especially when someone takes their toy away(1999). I think that the message and the layout of the book is great.
Aside from that I liked the illustrations. At some points I thought that there was a lot going on in the page, but I enjoyed the use of the words within the illustrations.

This picture book focuses on one main thing with the illustrations - the colors. As Sophie's anger starts to build up, the pages become more red and red and red. It also contains vivid pictures with heavy lines and bold action words to help portray the mood. As she calms down, the pictures turn soft, with blue/greens giving us a sense she is okay. Its a great book and teaches us to be willing to share, not overreact, or talk through a situation!
