In the autumn of 1941, Amelia J. McGee, a young woman of Cherokee and Scotch-Irish descent, and an outspoken pamphleteer for the NAACP, hastily sends her daughter, Ella, alone on a bus home to Georgia in the middle of the nighta desperate measure that proves calamitous when the child encounters two drifters and is left for dead on the side of the road. Ella awakens in the homestead of Willie Mae Cotton, a wise root doctor and former slave, and her partner, Mary-Mary Freeborn, tucked deep in the Takatoka Forest. As Ella heals, the secrets of her lineage are revealed. Shot through with Cherokee lore and hoodoo conjuring, Glow transports us from Washington, D.C., on the brink of World War II to the Blue Ridge frontier of 1836, from the parlors of antebellum manses to the plantation kitchens where girls are raised by women who stand in as mothers. As the land with all its promise and turmoil passes from one generation to the next, Ella's ancestral home turns from safe haven to mayhem and back again. Jessica Maria Tuccelli reveals deep insight into individual acts that can transform a community, and the ties that bind people together across immeasurable hardships and distances. Illuminating the tragedy of human frailty, the vitality of friendship and hope, and the fiercest of all bondsmother lovethe voices of Glow transcend their history with grace and splendor.

I‘m reading so slow this year but Glow is the third beautifully written, pleasingly complex book I‘ve read this year, and I have no regrets. This is the book I imagine when the words “historical family saga” appear on a book flap summary even though the family is less than typical. As several races mix very uneasily in a north Georgia, Tuccelli tells a deeply affecting story of slaves and masters, small town prejudice, and the supernatural.

When I took today off, the forecast said today would be sunny and warm, but this works too. 😊

This is the only book I have with a silhouette on the cover. I haven't read this book, but it is in the ever-growing TBR pile in my library. I hope it's good! #bookswithsilhouettes #seasonsreadings2016

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this book! It's beautifully written and the story is compelling. The main thing that holds me back from loving it is that there are just too many characters to keep track of--and all are told in 1st POV. I loved the section told by Riddle Young most!

Donna_sBookMinute An your layout is lovely. ☕️ 8y

"That's the thing about knowing someone your entire life. You have a common history; it binds, provides a depth that new friendships, new loves, can never create. It lets two folks be in the room together without having to explain their silences. Or their passions."
