Hollow of the Hand (Reader's)
Hollow of the Hand (Reader's) | PJ Harvey
5 posts | 4 read
Between 2011 and 2014 PJ Harvey and Seamus Murphy set out on a series of journeys together to Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Washington, D.C.. Harvey collected words, Murphy collected pictures, and together they created an extraordinary chronicle of our life and times. "The Hollow of the Hand" marks the first publication of Harvey's powerful poetry, in conversation with Murphy's indelible images. It is a landmark project and will be published internationally in autumn 2015. As PJ Harvey says: 'Gathering information from secondary sources felt too far removed for what I was trying to write about. I wanted to smell the air, feel the soil and meet the people of the countries I was fascinated with. Following our work on "Let England Shake," my friend Seamus Murphy and I agreed to grow a project together lead by our instincts on where we should go.' Seamus Murphy adds: 'Polly is a writer who loves images and I am a photographer who loves words. Our relationship began a few years ago when she asked me if I would like to take some photographs and make some films for her last album "Let England Shake." I was intrigued and the adventure began, now finding another form in this book. It is our look at home and the world.' "The Hollow of the Hand "will be available in a hardback edition with highest quality photographic reproductions, as well as a reader's paperback version.

Mehso-so

This was disappointingly just ok at 3🌟 from me. It's about decidedly difficult issues of war, colonisation, urban decay & social injustice, but it all felt so distant, dissociated and cold. Harvey came over to me as a tourist: detached & observing the spectacle. She hasn't appeared that way in interviews I've seen, so I was expecting something with more heart.
A few of Murphy's photographs are spectacular, but, again, overall left me rather cold.

There was an old road
trees in both sides

but they put the trees away
and built houses

Pity for the old road
and for the trees on the right and left side

In my childhood we are taking this road
always to go down by the river

and to love swimming
and coming back late in the evening

I still have the smell in my nose
It was dusty and the trees...

I am recognising that a lot of time
had passed through since I left
👇🏼

Bookwomble Some things are never gonna come back again
and not that it's making me sad

It's quite a normal process
but it's giving me a feeling

Bit of a gear change from the banks of the Withywindle (having just finished The Adventures of Tom Bombadil) to the conflict-zones of Kosovo, Afghanistan & Washington DC. Despite loving all I've heard by PJ Harvey, I haven't any of her albums, which I need to sort out.
Garden weeds care of No Mow May, which intends to supply bees with early sources of nectar & is, frankly, an excuse I don't need to read instead of work. Also, on my 4th cup of tea!

My #WomanCrushWednesday is the multitalented, amazing Polly Jean Harvey. She writes & sings music, is an accomplished sculptor, she was in a Hal Hartley movie, and she's a poet. Yaassss!
