Dagboksromanen Dvärgen från 1944 har kallats en studie i ondska och utspelar sig i en machiavellisk furstes hov i renässansens Italien. Huvudpersonen är en kärlekslös och ond dvärg som bara känner glädje vid krig och död. I berättelsen konfronteras vi med ondskan inom oss. Precis som många andra böcker i Lagerkvists författarskap ses den som en kritik av det samtida Europas främlingsfientlighet och nazism. Idag betraktas Dvärgen som ett av 1900-talets viktigaste verk. Det var också Pär Lagerkvists stora genombrott internationellt. Förordet är skrivet av Petter Alexis Askergren.

There are only a small handful of books that I consider masterpieces. “The Dwarf“ by Pars Lagerkvist is one of them. The book, written in the format of a diary, is short, easy to read, and complete. Even several weeks after finishing it, I keep thinking about the title character.
