The Waiter
The Waiter | Matias Faldbakken
7 posts | 8 read | 24 to read
Welcome to The Hills, Oslos most esteemed restaurant, an institution stewed in tradition and clinging to the faded grandeur of old Europe. A neurotic waiter tends to the desires of his regular and irregular clientele. Aristocrats and artistes, wealthy widows and roguish entrepreneurs, he observes all their dramas with a wit as sharp as a filleting knife. From the failed actor who sits alone and in disgrace, to the abandoned school girl left to her own devices, to Mr Graham The Pig, the most demanding of them all, who today is awaiting a significant guest. And she is late... Exquisitely observed and wickedly playful, THE WAITER is a novel for lovers of food, wine, and of European sensibilities, but also for anyone who has ever been in a restaurant, either side of the service

The Waiter | Matias Faldbakken

Loved loved this one. The waiter—a man who‘s so opinionated (“decaf coffee is a surrogate for the feeling of belonging”), so observant re subtleties (“raising the chin is a nod that goes backward”), so judgmental (“behind elegance is an undethronable tackiness”), and so aware of his love of the habits that form his life (“habit is like a blanket that settles over the nature of things”).

I love to read exciting and adventure novels, but sometimes I want to plunge into everyday life. So now I decided to pay attention to the novel by Norwegian writer Matias Faldbakken.
Who's the Waiter? He's the man no one notices. But he notices everyone and everything! 💁‍♂️

Faldbakken is a Norwegian author. His novel follows a waiter who works in an old fancy restaurant. It really doesn‘t have a compelling plot, but it explores the eccentricities of the customers and the waiter himself. The setting and characters are well done and entertaining, but it may not be for you if you require a well designed plot.

An interesting book. Overall too digressive and didn‘t get to the heart of the matter, so the story was unclear. But the narrator, a highly-sensitive aesthete who seems to unravel, is well realised & some of the vignettes are truly comic - slices of restaurant life, acutely observed. The customers are pompous &/or hedonistic, but don‘t change; there‘s a mysterious woman who drinks a quadruple espresso (respect) & unsettles the waiter. 🤔Fun read.

Mehso-so

🤷‍♀️ I liked reading it, and some observations made me chuckle, but nothing happens. Kinda like Nicholson Baker? It‘s a waiter‘s observations of his regular patrons in a classic, well-loved, historic restaurant. Interesting, entertaining, but not sure that I loved it.

#TBRtemptation post 1! #BEA18 Edition! The Hills is Oslo's most esteemed restaurant, adhering to old Europe's grandeur. A neurotic waiter tends to the clientele--aristocrats, artists, entrepreneurs, wealthy widows--and watches their love's dramas unfold. This is a novel for lovers of food, wine, European sensibilities, and those who frequent restaurants in front of or behind the scenes. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎
