Many Love
Many Love: A Memoir of Polyamory and Finding Love(s) | Sophie Lucido Johnson
6 posts | 5 read | 10 to read
Sophie Lucido Johnson gets a lot of questions when she tells people that shes polyamorous. Many Love is an intimate look at this often misunderstood practice: its history, its misconceptions, and Sophies personal transformation from serial monogamist to proud polyamorist. After trying for years to emulate her boomer parents forty-year and still-going-strong marriage, Sophie realized that maybe the love she was looking for was down a road less traveled. In this bold, graphic memoir, she explores her sexuality, her values, and the versions of love our society accepts and practices. Along the way, she shares what its like to play on Tinder side-by-side with your boyfriend, encounterand surmountmany types of jealousy, learn the power of female friendship, and other amazing things that happened when she stopped looking for the one. In a lot of ways, Many Love is Sophies love letter to everyone she has ever cared for. Witty, insightful, and complete with illustrations, this debut provides a memorable glimpse into an unconventional life.

I was surprised at how much I liked this. It was an easy read - very conversational and not quite a graphic novel, but lots of fun illustrations. I liked the author, which is pretty important in a memoir-type book. This is ostensibly about polyamory, but really, it's just kind of about love and searching for who you are and what works best for you and being a decent human to others while you are doing that. Continued in the comments.

Krisjericho The author is young, and I admit that I take all of the polyamory stuff with a grain of salt here because of that, but it did make me see a few things in a new light, like the enormous power of the love in certain friendships. I would be curious to revisit her in a couple decades and see how things are working for her. I am impressed with her ability to be open to all kinds of possibilities. I'd hang out with her. 5y

This was incredibly interesting! Id call it less a memoir about polygamy and more a memoir about the exploration of Love and how one human loves. Although I enjoyed this I did at times find it repetitive. The illustrations were a nice touch but I wouldn‘t pick this up if you are looking for a graphic novel type of memoir. The illustrations are just an added touch!

Yesterday I went to the book launch for Many Love by Sophie Lucido Johnson. She made me cry. Sophie is beautiful, this book is beautiful. It will expand your heart, even if, like me, you fall pretty heavily on the monogamous side of the spectrum.

This is part memoir, part explanation of the many ways polyamory can exist. Johnson writes candidly about relationships, inserting sketches that add to the narrative. She‘s funny, talented, and thoughtful. I loved how the folks she didn‘t want to name were referred to as Rory (a nod to Gilmore Girls). Though polyamory is not for me, I respect that it can work, and I appreciate Johnson putting herself out there.

Reviewsbylola This sounds fascinating. I‘ve watched a couple of TV specials about polyamory and it always intrigued me. 7y
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola It was really short, especially with the sketches, but a good read. The only other exposure to polyamory I‘d had was an episode of Real Sex on HBO when I was in high school, lol. This is very different than that orgy in the woods. 😆 7y

My current ARC is about polyamory which literally means “many love.” The author comes across as intelligent and funny, and I‘m enjoying her writing thus far.
