Larkswood House. The very name suggests birdsong, peace and elegance. It is home to the Hamilton children - Edward, Cynthia and Harriet - who enjoy the freedom and excitement of privilege. But in the glorious summer of 1896, with absent parents and a departed governess, disaster strikes the family, leaving it cruelly divided. More than 40 years later, on the eve of the Second World War, Louisa Hamilton, newly presented at court but struck down with glandular fever, is sent to Larkswood to recuperate. There, for the first time, she meets her grandfather, Edward, home after decades in India. But as Louisa begins to fall under the spell of Larkswood, she realises it holds the key to the mystery that shattered her family two generations before. Will she find the courage to unravel the dark secrets of the past? And can Larkswood ever become home to happiness again?

Ugh, not only do I regret buying this book new, but also wasting my time reading it to nearly the end. I just couldn‘t manage the last few pages.

I will spare everyone the rant, other than to say it wasn‘t the big relationship twist that was the problem. 👎🏾👎🏾

jlhammar Darn, it sounded so promising! Your flowers are lovely though 🌺 1y

Family secrets being unravelled in a gothic manor setting? Sign me up 🙋‍♀️
I loved this novel with dual timelines merging together to reveal family secrets. Louisa as the main character is forging her own path away from her mother‘s influence & is forming a relationship with her grandfather who is living back at Larkswood after fleeing his demons years before.

I wasn't expecting much from this, however I do enjoy reading the occasional book from a different era so thought I'd give it a try and I'm grateful I did.

Great attention to detail and informative of WW2 era which I thoroughly enjoyed learning about. The run up to the war adds an edge of tension that I'm not sure would be there otherwise.

Captivating family intrigue with a few surprises thrown in.
