A winter read-aloud with my two boys that was just lovely! Terpsichore and her family make a new home in Palmer, Alaska, after the Great Depression. A charming little story of a family connecting and building community in hopes to make this raw and unfamiliar land and life into their new home. 🌲 💙🏔

This historical fiction YA book was a winner with me. I had no idea in 1935 that Roosevelt had sent colonists to Palmer Alaska to get them off goverment aid by giving them tracks of land to farm, a house, a cow and a horse. It definitely was not smooth sailing and this book is full of true facts weaved through. I would bump this one to the top of your TBR pile if you are a history buff like me.

In 1935 Roosevelt crated 'the new deal'. One such deal was to offer tracks of land to willing families in Alaska called the Palmer colony. It cost 5 million and within five years half the families left. By 1965 only 20 original families were still there. Today there are only a handful left.
