A problematic sequel. The racist stereotypes are more apparent and the position of the doctor as a white saviour who the indigenous people choose to make king is quite uncomfortable. Beatrix did still enjoy listening but enough of the series for me.

It‘s probably my fault for reading the original and not the updated version but ooof at the casual racism and white savior narrative. If you can compartmentalize that stuff there is a good message of animal welfare and taking the time to learn and think critically in even the most unusual situations. That racism though is hard to overcome.

The story was entertains but I do believe I have had enough of Dr. Dolittle. Glad I have read some of the stories. Definitely not one of my favorites. 3.5 🌟

BookaholicNatty I love these soooo much!! I had fun coming across a few on vacation last week! These were the best inventions ever!!! Great for the kids too! Love to see your kids getting books out of it! Some of the #LittleFreeLibraries are very creative and adorable. Love this 3 decker one! ❤️❤️ (edited) 6y

This Newbery winner has held up well unlike others. Fun tale of boy who lives in little English village. He becomes apprenticed to a doctor who studies nature and who has learned to talk with animals. They go on a voyage (voyages is a stretch) to continue his work and find a floating island off the coast of South America. There they meet an Indian naturalist and spend 2 years having adventures until they return to England. #NewberyChallenge

Turns out I have a lot more books with pink spines than pink covers, but I'm loving that Doctor Doolittle is one of them. Such a classic! #RiotGrams
