Ransom | David Malouf
6 posts | 6 read | 6 to read
In his first novel in more than a decade, award-winning author David Malouf reimagines the pivotal narrative of Homers Iliadone of the most famous passages in all of literature. This is the story of the relationship between two grieving men at war: fierce Achilles, who has lost his beloved Patroclus in the siege of Troy; and woeful Priam, whose son Hector killed Patroclus and was in turn savaged by Achilles. A moving tale of suffering, sorrow, and redemption, Ransom is incandescent in its delicate and powerful lyricism and its unstated imperative that we imagine our lives in the glow of fellow feeling. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Just loved this retelling of Achilles and Priam‘s truce. David Malouf can be difficult (try teaching Fly Away Peter to rowdy adolescents!) but this book is an easy read and yet so so eloquent. The characters and the times just live on and on in your mind. And now I have discovered Madeline Miller! Historically happy!😁

Cinfhen Any post that mentions Madeline Miller gets my full attention!!! Most try this retelling ~ thanks for sharing 6y

Bailedbailed

Twenty pages and bailed, maybe it was the use of present tense or the sense that this was a retelling. Either way there is not enough time in life to read books that do not capture me by the twentieth page. 😕

Had to read this book for school and didn't really like it. Not huge on Greek mythology.

About to start my first school book for the year! I have set myself the task of reading each of my 3 books in 3 weeks and a bit! This weeks challenge is 35 pages a day of this one! I'll update as I get along!

The writing in this is breathtaking. Certainly a worthy addition to my ever-burgeoning Greek Classics shelf!
