Her Again
Her Again: Becoming Meryl Streep | Michael Schulman
8 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 8 to read
A portrait of a woman, an era, and a profession: the first thoroughly researched biography of Meryl Streepthe Iron Lady of acting, nominated for nineteen Oscars and winner of threethat explores her beginnings as a young woman of the 1970s grappling with love, feminism, and her astonishing talent. In 1975 Meryl Streep, a promising young graduate of the Yale School of Drama, was finding her place in the New York theater scene. Burning with talent and ambition, she was like dozens of aspiring actors of the timea twenty-something beauty who rode her bike everywhere, kept a diary, napped before performances, and stayed out late talking about acting with actors in actors bars. Yet Meryl stood apart from her peers. In her first season in New York, she won attention-getting parts in back-to-back Broadway plays, a Tony Award nomination, and two roles in Shakespeare in the Park productions. Even then, people said, Her. Again. Her Again is an intimate look at the artistic coming-of-age of the greatest actress of her generation, from the homecoming float at her suburban New Jersey high school, through her early days on the stage at Vassar College and the Yale School of Drama during its golden years, to her star-making roles in The Deer Hunter, Manhattan, and Kramer vs. Kramer. New Yorker contributor Michael Schulman brings into focus Meryls heady rise to stardom on the New York stage; her passionate, tragically short-lived love affair with fellow actor John Cazale; her marriage to sculptor Don Gummer; and her evolution as a young woman of the 1970s wrestling with changing ideas of feminism, marriage, love, and sacrifice. Featuring eight pages of black-and-white photos, this captivating story of the making of one of the most revered artistic careers of our time reveals a gifted young woman coming into her extraordinary talents at a time of immense transformation, offering a rare glimpse into the life of the actress long before she became an icon.

Some may consider her overrated, but in my opinion she is the queen of drama. #dramaqueen #characters2017

Dragon I will always remember the first time I saw her in a movie, Sophie's Choice. She was so good, I went out and bought the book. 7y

Meryl: When you give, it's the greatest happiness you can feel.
Raúl: The ultimate satisfaction is service, believe it or not. Man or woman.
Meryl: That's it! Why is it so hard for someone to say, just because it's a man, that "I'd - I'd do anything for you"? Why is it so hard?

I can't really explain why I feel so connected to Meryl, but it's true. So,reading this was like a gift. Didn't know about her early life--family, her move from stage to film, her involvement with Cazale, so much more.

The 70s! New York! Hollywood! Theater! Streep! I flew through this look at her early career, from college to her first couple of movies.

An interesting read about an actress I didn't know much about. It definitely speaks to her talent as an actress but also touches upon becoming simply herself in the world. It will certainly it make me watch her work more closely and seek out some of her breakout roles. Recommend!

A look at Meryl Streep's early career--up until her first Oscar win. Vaguely interesting but I didn't feel very connected to her life. Partly because the audiobook's narrator was poor choice, and partly because I didn't feel as if I gained any real insight into her as a person or actor.

BibliophileBytheSea Just finished this and liked it but wish more was explored. 9y
Lindy @BethFishReads What is the problem with the audiobook narrator? Who is it? 9y
BethFishReads @Lindy it's Eliza Foss. I need to hold off on details until I write up my review for AudioFile magazine. But a poor approach 9y
Lindy Hmm. Foss has narrated a couple of books I've been meaning to listen to (Schiff's Witches and Barbery's Gourmet Rhapsody). Must check one of them out. Curious. 9y

"She was beautiful. Everyone knew it except her. Alabaster skin. High cheekbones that seemed chiseled like statuary. Hooded eyes, set slightly close. Hair the color of cornsilk. A nose so long and forked it was practically an event."

Megabooks I just read a review of this book 20 minutes ago! I'm not big into biographies, though. 9y
BibliophileBytheSea @Ebooksandcooks - I just started this one so can't comment yet but, I've always loved M.Streep. 9y
