This is 3rd in the Kate Shugak Investigations series, and I think what I love most about this series so far (other than the spunky, tough-as-nails Kate) is the originality of the storylines/plots. This one finds Kate undercover working on an Alaskan fishing trawler in the Bering Sea attempting to discover what happened to two former crew members and investigating allegations of corruption and fraudulence of the team. Love the writing, love the 🔻

TheAromaofBooks I was pretty ambivalent towards the first book, so I haven't read any more. But maybe I should give book 2 a try... 2mo

Kate Shugak goes undercover on a crab fishing vessel in the Aleutian islands to investigate the disappearance of two members of the crew.

As someone who gets seasick easily, I found this one a bit too graphic in its description of the lives of the crab fishing crews. The author says she spent five years in her childhood on a crab fishing vessel with her mother. I just cannot, will not try to, imagine it.

Although there was a crime at the heart of this, most of the story was the Alaskan weather, countryside and history! I did disappear down the internet rabbit hole a couple of times to read a bit more. I had no idea the Japanese actually landed on some Alaskan islands, not just Pearl Harbour in the 2nd WW.

Tamra Yes! And several islands were evacuated and the natives were displaced for a few years, without adequate care & provision. You can imagine what they returned to when they finally made it home given soldiers had been stationed on some. 6y
