Botanical Folk Tales of Britain and Ireland
Botanical Folk Tales of Britain and Ireland | Lisa Schneidau
7 posts | 7 read | 36 to read
The islands of Britain and Ireland hold a rich heritage of plant folklore and wisdom, from the magical yew tree to the bad-tempered dandelion. Here are traditional tales about the trees and plants that shape our landscapes and our lives through the seasons. They explore the complex relationship between people and plants, in lowlands and uplands, fields, bogs, moors, woodlands and towns. Suitable for all ages, this is an essential collection of stories for anyone interested in botany, the environment and our living heritage.

I simply adore my #Naturalitsyswap gifts! Those socks are the best! I will think of you, @TheBookHippie every time I wear them. Even my daughter said that they looked just like me! I can‘t wait to get outside and paint, but first I will be exploring the other books you sent too. Perfection!! #SummerSolsticeSwap #Naturalitsy #MidSummerSwap

AllDebooks Wow, what a lovely selection to receive x 1y

This charming collection is exactly as the title says: a collection of folktales of Britain and Ireland. Storyteller and environmentalist Lisa Schneidau has connected each of the tales to the plants and trees that change in prominence as the year progresses. It‘s a delight. Audiobook narrated with warmth by Joan Walker.

Recent studies suggest that Jack and the Beanstalk, one of Britain‘s most well known folktales, is over 5 thousand years old.

rockpools Wow! That‘s v cool. But how can they possibly work that out?! 2y
Lindy @rockpools I would like to know that too. 🤷‍♀️ 2y
mandarchy I thought the most recent finding was 10,000 years. I researched it with my students a few years ago and a new paper had just come out. I can't remember what they used as evidence. 2y

Lindy @mandarchy 10,000 years… wow! 2y
mandarchy @Lindy Well, I just tried to look it up and I cannot find the paper that claimed it was that old. Which is frustrating. Probably my brain just getting excited. But the way they trace the story is by tracing linguistic markers. The story comes from Cornwall which has Neolithic settlements. Archeologist have found evidence of Mediterranean contact at these sites which explains the indo-euro connection. 2y
Lindy @mandarchy Thanks for this information, Mandy. I‘m tagging Rachel @rockpools because she was also curious about how folktales can be dated. 2y
rockpools @Lindy @mandarchy That‘s so interesting- thank you! 2y

I love these tales!! They‘re so readable and magical; a perfect pick for #ReadingEurope2020 (#UK + #Ireland).

“The Spectre Bridegroom” was prob my fav; it‘s set on Halloween with spells and specters. 👻

“Hemp seed I sow, Hemp seed I grow; For my true love to come after and mow.”

I read about half this month, giving me +161 points for #Scarathlon2020. And I started #fraterfestrat + #fallreadathon!

“Maon and the Willow“ is an Irish folktale about sharing secrets. Doesn't matter who you tell, they always seem to come out.

The willow in this story is the voice of truth. 🌳

“Boggarts, or bogles, are creatures bent on causing havoc, often linked with the land.”

I always just assumed the boggart was a wholesale invention of JK Rowling, but apparently I was wrong! They can be found throughout British folklore.

In “The Farmer and the Boggart,” a farmer outwits the nuisance with a tricky use of his crops. The boggart then goes on to haunt local byways. #britain #readingeurope2020 #folktales #bookspin #doublespin
