#ReadHarder2020: a memoir by someone from a religious tradition that is not your own. #ReadHarder

I like Rabbi Ruttenberg's internet presence, so I knew as soon as I saw this prompt that I wanted to read this book for it. I found it beautiful and inspiring, and it made me want to see how I can deepen my own spiritual life (and half-wish I were Jewish so I could follow more directly in her footsteps).

effani What I don't think this book does, and what the description kind of makes it sound like it does, is meaningfully explain how a person goes from being a hardcore atheist to taking religious practice seriously. I'm not sure that's a thing that you really can explain to someone who hasn't experienced it, so it's not a knock against the book, but I don't think this book would satisfy a reader who doesn't have any urges toward spirituality. 5y

Has anyone read this? Is it good? It has been on my wishlist for over a year... I'm hoping it goes on sale.

“I did consent to reading through the long list of misdeeds in the prayer book: for the sin that we have committed before You by hardening our hearts, for the sin that we have committed before You through harsh speech, for the sin that we have committed before You by being scornful, for the sin that we have committed before You by wronging our neighbor.”

I read 3 nonfiction nominees for the 2010 Sami Rohr Prize for emerging Jewish authors...this one was my fave! I felt an affinity for Rabbi Ruttenberg and how she unequivocally finds meaning in progressive Judaism. She also challenges herself to live a spiritual life w/in the confines of the community that gives her so much meaning--hint to self! She's direct but not dogmatic, & an inspiration.
