I selected this read for my 40 year reading challenge for the year 1996 and it was beyond disturbing. Told from the POV of a pedophile in jail for the murder of a young girl named Alice he corresponds with a teenage girl who shares similar interests. Saying one enjoys this book is messed up. It‘s disturbing so be warned. #19822022 @Librarybelle

Saw a post on the most disturbing reads and naturally I had to find it. Told in the POV of a convicted pedophile and murderer who corresponds via mail with a younger girl who shares his ideals, this was a hard one. The writing wasn't bad but all over the place as you see the gradual decline of the narrator. Graphic at many points and deeply unsettling. I really just don't know what to think....

1. I read this knowing it would be uncomfortable, but I regret it.
2. I was way too young and sheltered when I read this.
3. I had to DNF this because it was not a headspace I wanted, or ever want, to be in.

Definitely not for the faint hearted. Found that I could‘ve read the last 3 chapters and got the full story without reading the whole book.

Trigger warnings for so many things in this one: rape, pedophilia, child abuse, violence, etc. The stream of consciousness style is perfected in this book. The characters are so believable that it almost feels like nonfiction. It truly is a dark and deeply disturbing book, but absolutely worth reading.

Here is the incredible story of an imprisoned pedophile who is drawn into an erotically charged correspondence with a nineteen-year-old suburban coed. As the two reveal -- and revel in -- their obsessive desires, Homes creates in The End of Alice a novel that is part romance, part horror story, at once unnerving and seductive.

This was an...interesting book. Definitely left me feeling a little icky after I read it.

So, I'm a bit of a weirdo and love books that shock and disturb me. The End of Alice comes to mind, as do Tampa, American Psycho and J.G. Ballard's Crash. Anyone got any good ones in mind that are must-reads for weirdos like me?
