pickOther than the occasional name dropping (Miss Anthony, Sam Clemens) I liked the writing style. The story held my interest, and the topics are important. But the ending felt a bit too “let‘s wrap this up now.” I wish we had been shown rather than told the various fates of the main characters.
pickThe backdrop of this novel is a southern Illinois town on the Mississippi River in the late 1870s with a cast of characters that draws you in right from the start. The novel deals with survival in economic hard times, the after effects of the Civil War, politics - in particular, women's issues, and includes enough uncertainty wrt the characters that will hold your interest to the very last page. Loved her use of language.

pickI loved this historical novel. Maddy and her mother are not living an easy life, and growing up alongside Maddy really immerses the reader in a great small-town story. Suffragettes versus the Sin Society, actresses--even a velocipede boneshaker! ❤️❤️❤️
