Seventh Decimate
Seventh Decimate: The Great God's War Book One | Stephen Donaldson
12 posts | 5 read | 8 to read
The war between Amika and Belleger has raged for generations. Its roots lie in the distant past, beyond memory. Sorcerers from both sides rain destruction down on the battlefield, wielding the six deadly Decimates of fire, earth, wind, water, lightning, and pestilence. Prince Bifalt hopes that Belleger's new weapons technology, the rifle, will provide a decisive advantage. But when Belleger's sorcerers are mysteriously deprived of their magical abilities, leaving them unable to defend against Amika, he must set aside his own deep hatred of sorcery and work to solve this new enigma. Grasping at any chance to save his beloved homeland, Prince Bifalt of Belleger sets out on a hazardous journey across the unmapped wastelands to the east. With Elgart, his last comrade, Bifalt pursues the long-hidden trail of the one object that might be able to turn the tide of the endless war - a book entitled The Seventh Decimate. The events that unfold force Prince Bifalt to weigh his stubbornness, his patriotism, and his hatred for sorcerers against his sense of loyalty and of what he knows to be right. And as he learns, Amika and Belleger may simply be pawns within an even larger struggle...

"In the instant of his death—the instant when he should have died—a voice had spoken to him. Are you ready? It could only have been a sorcerer‘s voice. And it gave him cause to think that he had been singled out by an inconceivable power for an incomprehensible purpose...He had felt his own death. He had seen it take him. He did not know why he was still alive. #QuotsySept18 #QuotsyCatchup

“There is a seventh?...I shudder to think that there is a Decimate more virulent than those we have witnessed, to our great cost in blood and pain.”

TK-421 "It is a power unlike any you have conceived. It does not harm flesh or wood or stone. It does not roil the heavens or shake the earth. Rather, it halts all lesser sorceries. It renders sorcerers futile. We are helpless because the seventh Decimate has been invoked against us.”

The seventh Decimate could be the #Ultimate weapon against sorcery. #QuotsyJune18

I was first in line to at my local library (well, first on the e-book hold list) to get my hands on Stephen R. Donaldson's latest when it came out last November. I'm looking forward to buying it once the soft cover is released so I can read it again while I wait for the sequel! No official word on when that'll be, but I think I read that his contract allows for 18 months between books but he hoped to do better than that. #SequelPlease! #Riotgrams

These two quotes are part of the same scene, appearing a page or so apart in the book. I thought they worked well together.

"...he had been at their mercy from the first, a toy for them to play with."

"To the Magisters, he was only a game piece. They had no reason to care if he did not understand the game."

"... he began to dream: a formless something without shape or meaning. At first, it was nothing more than lurid streaks of color leaping like flames. Then, slowly, he realized he was dreaming of fire...He did not care. It was only a dream. It had no significance until he began to believe he was being roasted alive. Still, he did not awaken...he remained asleep, dreaming of incineration despite his efforts to escape." #Nightmare #QuotsyDec17

When I learned about SRD's #FirstNovel in years, I was elated & first in line to borrow the e-book from my library when it came out! November was so busy that I wasn't able to read much, but now #ItsBeginning. I have 4 days before my loan expires, but I expect it'll be enough time to devour the story. Dec #TBR plans are to finish e-loans before they expire, complete #LitsyAtoZ & wrap up my Goodreads challenge. Anything else I read is a bonus 😃

"You have to ask? Where are such tomes kept? In a library, of course...A repository of books. The great Repository of the sorcerers." More for #QuotsyNov17 from my current read. #Protest #Library

One more day! It's not often that I get excited about new releases, but when one of my favourite authors launches a new series, that's something to celebrate. I've been waiting for this one since March. Luckily, my local library has it available and I'm first in line! (cover image from http://stephenrdonaldson.com)

A bit of a genre shift. Some epic fantasy up next. Donaldson starts his first new series since ending the Thomas Covenant series. Epic fantasy isn‘t my favorite genre but I loved the Covenant books so I‘m gonna give it a go. Read by Scott Brick

A day late for day 6 of #UncannyOctober... Here's one book I'm #Waiting for: Seventh Decimate by Stephen R. Donaldson. It's the first book in a brand new series unrelated to all his previous works. I'm looking forward to reading about a new world, with new characters! (images from http://stephenrdonaldson.com)

Yesterday's #MarchintoReading prompt #AutoBuyAuthors got me wondering if there are any Stephen R. Donaldson books I wasn't aware of. I checked his website today and guess what?!? He has a new trilogy in the works! I downloaded an excerpt and I'm intrigued by this new world, its people, and their magics.
