African Folktales
African Folktales | Roger D Abrahams
4 posts | 2 read | 7 to read
The deep forest and broad savannah, the campsites, kraals, and villages--from this immense area south of the Sahara Desert the distinguished American folklorist Roger D. Abrahams has selected ninety-five tales that suggest both the diversity and the interconnectedness of the people who live there. The storytellers weave imaginative myths of creation and tales of epic deeds, chilling ghost stories, and ribald tales of mischief and magic in the animal and human realms. Abrahams renders these stories in a narrative voice that reverberates with the rhythms of tribal song and dance and the emotional language of universal concerns. Mehso-so

I always struggle with reviewing fairy tale collections, so I‘ll just say: I like some of these, and some I did not. You could definitely see how fairy tales all over the world are inspired by one another, since a lot of the elements of these felt familiar, while others were completely new.

Babs_book_obsession So pretty though! 6y

I just came home from an event about East African literature, with food inspired by the region 👌 it inspired me to finally give this collection of folktales a go to learn more about the stories influencing a lot of my favourite books set in Africa 👏

I‘m so looking forward to reading this book of African Folktales. I love fairy- and folktales, and especially fairy- and folktales from a #foreigncountry. Tales and stories give a different kind of insight into a specific country or culture, than novels and nonfiction books do, in my opinion. 📖
