Saxons, Vikings, and Celts: The Genetic Roots of Britain and Ireland
Saxons, Vikings, and Celts: The Genetic Roots of Britain and Ireland | Bryan Sykes
1 post | 2 read | 5 to read
From the best-selling author of The Seven Daughters of Eve, a perfect book for anyone interested in the genetic history of Britain, Ireland, and America. One of the world's leading geneticists, Bryan Sykes has helped thousands find their ancestry in the British Isles. Saxons, Vikings, and Celts, which resulted from a systematic ten-year DNA survey of more than 10,000 volunteers, traces the true genetic makeup of the British Isles and its descendants, taking readers from the Pontnewydd cave in North Wales to the resting place of the Red Lady of Paviland and the tomb of King Arthur. This illuminating guide provides a much-needed introduction to the genetic history of the people of the British Isles and their descendants throughout the world.

I happened across this book when I stopped in to visit my fav used book store. It‘s a perfect fit with my recent genealogy research. I‘m stupid happy. Plus, maps!! 🍀⚔️🛡🔱

Leftcoastzen Wow ,love the maps , sounds fascinating! 7y
LeahBergen Cool! A recent DNA test shows I mostly match a bunch of genetic populations in northern Scotland. 7y
Miss_Shush Yeah! Maps rule! 7y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @LeahBergen Nice! Was that a surprise to you? Or did you already have ancestors mapped out from there? 7y
LeahBergen Well, I knew my family was definitely from Scotland and England but I was surprised at the concentration in the north. I was also expecting some other countries to be in the mix but nope... nothing. 😂 My husband‘s results were much more varied and interesting. 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @LeahBergen Same for me. My husband‘s results are much more interesting. Although I‘m apparently almost half Norwegian which isn‘t what I expected. My great great great grandmother was from Norway but the math doesn‘t match my DNA. Hence the book. A lot of my family is Northumbria - on both sides - maybe you and I are related! 7y
Melissa_J @LeahBergen maybe we are related. I‘ve got lots of ancestors from Northern Scotland and the Hebrides! 7y
LeahBergen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Melissa_J Maybe we should have a Litsy DNA bank. There are probably genetic reasons why we are all the way we are. 😆 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @LeahBergen @Melissa_J I wonder what the marker is for voracious reading? I‘ll bet we DO all share it! 7y
TheEldritchProfessor Must read! Also, jumping on the English/Scottish/Welsh/Irish DNA train as well. 7y
