The Pier Falls
The Pier Falls | Mark Haddon
An expedition to Mars goes terribly wrong. A seaside pier collapses. A thirty-stone man is confined to his living room. One woman is abandoned on a tiny island in the middle of the ocean. Another woman is saved from drowning. Two boys discover a gun in a shoebox. A group of explorers find a cave of unimaginable size deep in the Amazon jungle. A man shoots a stranger in the chest on Christmas Eve. In this first collection of stories by the author of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time Mark Haddon demonstrates two things: first that he is a master of the short form (several of the stories have been longlisted for prizes), second that his imagination is even darker than we had thought.

An outstanding collection of short stories. Hardly a dull moment. A huge mix of styles and stories from moving to humorous and back again. Definitely recommend! 🙌

Didn't know he wrote short stories; the first story is the title of the collection and I immediately had to re-read it.

Wowee what a rollercoaster of short stories. One minute you're on Mars the next you're in a council estate. I absolutely adore Mark Haddon's style and love how he can write about things in such a matter-of-fact way yet convey so much feeling. He has a knack of making the humdrum of daily life so interesting and quirky.

Personal favourite in this collection are The Pier Falls, Wudwo and The Gun.

The desire to be somewhere else, which is never satisfied by being somewhere else, however far you go, though you have to go a very long way indeed to figure that one out.

I liked some of these stories more than others, and the writing is unquestionably good. A bit too dark for me, however.

I have not read much #shortstories at all. You can probably count them on one hand. However, this weekend I picked up a short story collection at the library. I have seen it in all book stores and now am very curious about it. Has anyone already read it? And do you have any short story recommendations?

Kalalalatja Karen Russell writes really funny and weird short stories. Neil Gaiman is also great, so if you like his novels, I would definitely recommend his short stories 👍 8y
I-read-and-eat @Kalalalatja I have never actually read anything by Neil Gaiman. But he is all over Litsy, I should pick up one of his books sometime. Thanks for the recommendations. 😊 8y

She waits, and waits, and when the silence finally comes it is worse, for she has been stripped of everything that used to shield her from a hard world where every action has a consequence. She has no one else to blame. This is her punishment.

[...] the taller man with the braces and the rolled-up shirtsleeves slides down the buckled planking till he is brought to a halt by a spike of broken rail which enters the small of his back. He wriggles like a fish. No one will go down to help him.

I cannot get over this quirky and unforgettable collection of short stories by Mark Haddon, the author of THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT-TIME. Though all vastly different, each story portrays a situation of isolation, abandonment, or someone forcibly cut-off from world. 💖🏞 | 🌟🌟🌟🌟
