The Fire Court
The Fire Court | Andrew Taylor
6 posts | 8 read | 8 to read
From No.1 bestselling author Andrew Taylor comes the sequel to the phenomenally successful The Ashes of London. A gripping historical thriller set in the aftermath of The Great Fire of London. A city striving to recover. A killer waiting to strike. London, May 1667. Six months after The Great Fire, London is still in blackened ruins. With tensions running to boiling point, the government has created the Fire Court to settle legal disputes over the re-building of the city. James Marwood is happy keeping his distance from the machinations of the Fire Court, and settling into a quiet life as a clerk. But one day, his elderly father claims to have stumbled upon a dead woman. His story is so strange that Marwood dismisses it. The next day, though, his father is run over and killed. Soon, Marwood becomes convinced his father's death is linked to the Fire Court. And when a clerk at the Court is burned alive in his chamber, the hunt is on to stop a killer, before he strikes again...

Another great story. It's a slow start but there is some real drama in this. The writing and description of London during these times is so good, the plot builds to a clever and interesting ending. I love James, he's such a complex character yet you cant help but want him to succeed. I like that this isn't about him and Cat falling in love, yet a part of me still wants them too. #Netgalley 4*

i.z.booknook Oooh! I haven‘t seen this one but loved The Ashes of London! 5y

Mehso-so

My overwhelming attitude to this was meh. Everything that was OK about the first one was still OK but unfortunately everything that was weak/annoying/boring about it seemed even more so in this one. Especially the excessive dry description. I also grew to really dislike the two MCs. And, while it is largely inoffensive/mildly entertaining, the historical murder mystery genre is done much better elsewhere.

readingjedi Would recommend this instead 🙂 6y

Great historical crime novel of 17th century London. 2nd in a series but easy to read as a stand alone. Loved this fast-paced story!
