Embers of War
Embers of War | Gareth L. Powell
From BSFA Award winning author Gareth L. Powell comes the first in a new epic sci-fi trilogy exploring the legacies of war. The sentient warship Trouble Dog was built for violence, yet following a brutal war, she is disgusted by her role in a genocide. Stripped of her weaponry and seeking to atone, she joins the House of Reclamation, an organisation dedicated to rescuing ships in distress. When a civilian ship goes missing in a disputed system, Trouble Dog and her new crew of loners, captained by Sal Konstanz, are sent on a rescue mission. Meanwhile, light years away, intelligence officer Ashton Childe is tasked with locating the poet, Ona Sudak, who was aboard the missing spaceship. What Childe doesnt know is that Sudak is not the person she appears to be. A straightforward rescue turns into something far more dangerous, as Trouble Dog, Konstanz and Childe find themselves at the centre of a conflict that could engulf the entire galaxy. If she is to save her crew, Trouble Dog is going to have to remember how to fight...

This is a re-read in preparation to continuing the series. I love that we get the ship as a narrator.

May is probably the easiest month for me to pick my favorite. The Embers of War trilogy by Gareth L. Powell was one of the best science fiction stories I've ever read, and I've read plenty in my 40+ years of reading. I've recommended it to others, especially fans of The Expanse TV series.

57/150 I love a good space opera, and this is one of the best I've come across in a long time. Well rounded characters, multiple POVs, tense space battles and a mysterious new alien species. Fans of the Dune and The Expanse series would find this enjoyable. Now on to Book 2: Fleet of Knives. 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Galactic empires with AI space ships.

War as entertainment novels have a fine line to walk between losing their enjoyment value by being too serious and glorifying war. If they do it wrong they become kinda vile.

Low on the space battles and heavy on rescue operations and bad memories. Seems to be commenting on the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

There is a magic bear.

Too many plot coincidences at the end.

I‘d forgotten the interlude on Cichol and I have complicated conflicting feelings: I love the Dog‘s loyalty and fuck your shit interpretation of orders; but I feel for the poor townsfolk who are bystanders to the carnage - and victims of the proxy war between two human factions who should know better. Fuck politicians, honestly. I sort of hope this scene comes back to haunt everyone later in the trilogy.

Thoroughly enjoyed Embers of War. The story begins with a terrible choice and ends with a a satisfactory conclusion that leaves you wanting to immediately know the rest of the story. Recommend!

#RRSciFiMonth Day 12: best ship in the galaxy, kid.

So many options, but the Trouble Dog is a recent fave for me: a conscience-stricken warship, decommissioned and working search & rescue. I love how the AI cares about the crew even as you hear figurative eyes rolling at their foibles. Also, very fierce. ❤️
