Elliott Smith and the Big Nothing
Elliott Smith and the Big Nothing | Benjamin Nugent
1 post | 3 read
Best known for his Oscar-nominated song "Miss Misery" from the Good Will Hunting soundtrack, Elliott Smith was catapulted to the status of indie rock star after performing at the 1997 Academy Awards. Some of his albums, XO and Either/Or among them, would become '90s classics, helping to define an understated aesthetic that owed as much to the melodic emphasis of The Beatles as it did to punk. In the afterglow of the success of "Miss Misery," Smith's fame grew--alongside his struggles with depression and substance abuse. First relocating to Brooklyn, and then finally to L.A., he fell into a downward spiral evident to friends and fans alike, even as he continued to write such beautifully realized songs as "Waltz #2" (XO). Drawing on new interviews with those who knew and loved Smith, and focusing on the crucial interplay between Smith's life and music, Ben Nugent compellingly and sympathetically portrays an enormously gifted, yet troubled, artist.

1) Going out to lunch with my family tomorrow. Otherwise read as much as possible & finish Broadchurch season 1.
2) It's been a slower month for me, don't have exact numbers. Maybe 15?
3) Summer. Four years in Minnesota provided me with a love for warm weather.
4) Pixies, Flaming Lips, Elliott Smith, Tom Waits, Radiohead, Sleater Kinney, The Roots.
5) Will do!

saresmoore You win for coolest concerts! I‘m liking summer much more now that I live in a place that doesn‘t have heat so unrelenting and intense as to make you wish you weren‘t born, year-round. 😁 7y
batsy I was an emotional wreck after Broadchurch season 1! Still haven't recovered to resume the rest of the show. 7y

vivastory @ReadOrDieRachel No, this was on the Hot Rock tour. I hope to see them again. They were great! Plus, I think it would be a richer experience having read Brownstein's memoir 7y
saresmoore The winters are typically mild with only one or two bouts of snowfall that stick. It‘s certainly enough for me, though! 7y
BarbaraBB Radiohead... I‘ve been to so many shows but they are still on my bucketlist 7y
