From a Paris Balcony
From a Paris Balcony | Ella Carey
4 posts | 4 read | 6 to read
Heartbroken and alone, Boston art curator Sarah West is grieving the recent deaths of her parents and the end of her marriage. Ultrasensible by nature, she's determined to stay the course to get her life back on track. But fate has something else in mind. While cleaning out her father's closet, she finds a letter from the famous Parisian courtesan Marthe de Florian, dated 1895. The subject? Sarah's great-great-aunt Louisa's death. Legend has it Louisa committed suicide...but this letter implies there's more to that story. Determined to learn the truth, Sarah, against her nature, impulsively flies to Paris. There she's drawn into the world of her flatmate, the brilliant artist Laurent Chartier. As she delves deep into the glittering Belle poque to unravel the mystery, Sarah finds that her aunt's story may offer her exactly what she needs to open up to love again. Following Sarah in the present day and Louisa in the 1890s, this moving novel spans more than a century to tell the stories of two remarkable women.

22 #93 The final book in this series. I didn‘t care for this one as much as the other two. I listened on Audible so I‘m not sure if it was the narrator or what. But I simply did not connect to protagonist. And I was not invested in her love interest. The plot was interesting, but character development was lacking.

This HF alternates between 2 story lines—1895 and 2015 in Paris. MC rents Marthe de Florian‘s Belle Époque apt for the summer to investigate the alleged suicide of her great great aunt in 1895 in a fall from a balcony near Florian‘s place. What she discovers is fascinating ?

Eggs @Rachel_nyc I wonder how many Paris novels there are these days. Ella Carey is known for and loves anything Paris-related 6y
Rachel_nyc @Eggs I feel like there are always a few new ones I‘m looking forward to. Recently I read French Exit, The Great Believers and Dictionary of Animal Languages which had great Paris passages and one for sure I plan to read this year is The Rain Watcher which is the new one from the author of Sarah‘s Key (another great one set in Paris!)
