Murder by Misrule
Murder by Misrule: A Francis Bacon Mystery | Anna Castle
3 posts | 4 read | 7 to read
Francis Bacon is charged with investigating the murder of a fellow barrister at Gray's Inn. He recruits his unwanted protégé Thomas Clarady to do the tiresome legwork. Clarady, the son of a privateer, will do anything to climb the Elizabethan social ladder. Bacon's powerful uncle Lord Burghley suspects Catholic conspirators of the crime, but other motives quickly emerge. Rival barristers contend for the murdered man's legal honors and wealthy clients. Powerful courtiers are implicated as the investigation reaches from Whitehall to the London streets. Bacon does the thinking; Clarady does the fencing. Everyone has something up his pinked and padded sleeve. Even the brilliant Francis Bacon is at a loss ? and in danger ? until he sees through the disguises of the season of Misrule.

Since I still don‘t have access to a computer, this will be brief. I loved this book. It‘s well written, historic and a really good mystery. As if that wasn‘t enough, I loved most characters. Some are real people from 16th century England. There was also a completely unexpected twist towards the end.

So much 16th century fun and frivolity with a few murders thrown in. I didn‘t think much of this as a mystery because there were too many last minute reveals. I did like the tale of friends moving about town and all the historical details. But I just can‘t stop wishing this great concept had occurred to a better author.
