This has to be the most bizarre and unique book I‘ve ever read. Written after the trial of a snake-handling preacher who tried to kill his wife, this is the perfect example of faith that borders on obsession. I won‘t soon forget this one.
It isn‘t every day that snake handling comes up as a topic, but when it does, I‘m interested. This is a firsthand look at the mysterious and mystical practice of handling poisonous snakes in religious worship.
Covington‘s firsthand account of living and worshipping among this unique breed is authentic, balanced and is the closest to what I think an accurate portrayal could be.

Let me tell you, the bite of the serpent is nothing compared to the bite of your fellow man.
The tragedy is not the death of a particular snake handler, but the failure of the world to accept the gospel that the handler risked his life to confirm.

An Alabama preacher is convicted of the attempted murder of his wife (by poisonous snake) and the author, a journalist, heads to Appalachia to investigate. Snake handling, strychnine drinking, speaking in tongues ... this is a fantastic, immersive look at the limits of faith.
