Another Side of Paradise
Another Side of Paradise: A Novel | Sally Koslow
14 posts | 6 read | 20 to read
The author of the acclaimed international bestseller The Late, Lamented Molly Marx imaginatively brings to life the shocking affair of F. Scott Fitzgerald and his longtime lover, Sheilah Graham, in this dazzling novel of romance, celebrity, and Gatsby-esque self-creation in 1930s Hollywood. In 1937 Hollywood, gossip columnist Sheilah Grahams star is on the rise, while literary wonder boy F. Scott Fitzgeralds career is slowly drowning in booze. But the once-famous author, desperate to make money penning scripts for the silver screen, is charismatic enough to attract the gorgeous Miss Graham, a woman who exposes the secrets of others while carefully guarding her own. Like Scotts hero Jay Gatsby, Graham has meticulously constructed a life far removed from the poverty of her childhood in Londons slums. And like Gatsby, the onetime guttersnipe learned early how to use her charms to become a hardworking success feted and feared by both the movie studios and their luminaries. A notorious drunk famously married to the doomed "crazy Zelda," Fitzgerald fell hard for his "Shielah" (he never learned to spell her name), a shrewd yet soft-hearted womanboth a fool for love and nobodys foolwho would stay with him and help revive his career until his tragic death three years later. Working from diaries and other primary sources from the time, Sally Koslow revisits their scandalous love affair, bringing Graham and Scott gloriously alive in this compelling page-turner saturated with the color, glitter, magic, and passion of 1930s Hollywood and Sheilahs dramatic transformation in London.

I got 2/3 into this but the relentless abusive alcoholic episodes went on too long at the same level of shittiness. I don‘t have time to keep reading about asshole behavior going nowhere just because of an interest in the real people this is based on.

MirrorMask You did better than me. I got the book from the library, read the inside jacket and returned it. 7y
REPollock @MirrorMask I got sucked in at the beginning because it jumped back in time to Sheilah‘s childhood in an orphanage for Jewish children and while it was all about her growing up and making her way on her own, I was all in. Then Fitzgerald showed up and it all went to hell. 7y

Mehso-so

I‘m just not a fan of F Scott Fitzgerald although the author did her darnedest to try to convince me. I really enjoyed the early years of Sheilah Graham, however, as she reinvents herself from Lily Shiel, a poverty-stricken Jewish girl who was sent to an orphanage, to a well-known Hollywood gossip columnist who has a torrid live affair with Fitzgerald.

Oy. Fitzgerald relapsing into hot-mess alcoholism is rough.

Dorothy Parker is a recurring character! This book is so much more than it‘s been marketed as—Fitzgerald appeared in the first chapter and it‘s been a wild badass biography of Sheilah ever since. 💖
