All the Colours of Darkness
All the Colours of Darkness: The 18th DCI Banks Mystery | Peter Robinson
4 posts | 7 read | 2 to read
A beautiful June day in the Yorkshire Dales, and a group of children are spending the last of their half-term freedom swimming in the river near Hipswell Woods. But the idyll is shattered by their discovery of a mans body, hanging from a tree. DI Annie Cabott soon discovers he is Mark Hardcastle, the well-liked and successful set designer for the Eastvale Theatres current production of Othello. Everything points to suicide, and Annie is mystified. Why would such a man want to take his own life? Then Annie's investigation leads to another shattering discovery, and DCI Alan Banks is called back from the idyllic weekend he had planned with his new girlfriend. Banks soon finds himself plunged into a shadow-world where nothing is what it seems, where secrets and deceit are the norm, and where murder is seen as the solution to a problem. The deeper he digs the more he discovers that the monster he has awakened will extend its deadly reach to his friends and family. Nobody is safe.

I‘ve been mad about mysteries in recent months. This was the first series I started on, last Fall, and it‘s been tremendous. But this book is number 18, & while I love the series immensely, this book was pretty meh. The whole “secret service can do anything” vibe + the relationship with Sophie (all I‘ll say is come ON) left me a bit underwhelmed. I think my favorite of all the books, after the first, is “In a Dry Season” (number 10). So evocative.

MittenGirlPeach Despite this book not being on top of my list, If you start the journey, you won‘t be disappointed! 4y
MittenGirlPeach And lastly, I‘m in for #JoysofJune, @Andrew65 ! I‘m planning on five books. Number one is the tagged book. Finished! The others: The Vows of Silence, The shadows on the street, betrayal of trust, and the second Poppy Redfern. Here‘s to a terrific reading June for all of us! 4y
Andrew65 How strange, number 10 was my favourite too. 4y

Book 18 in this series already. Time flies by when you‘re reading. Really shitty beginning to another week. Waiting for better days...

Mehso-so

I'm not sure what I think about this book. Peter Robinson's DCI Banks books are usually of a high standard. This one seemed to lose its way a little, paying too much attention to a sub plot that had little relevance to the final outcome. To put the main character through a terrorist attack seems a step too far too unless it will have further consequences in later books. I did enjoy the book but feel earlier books in the series were better.
