Ghost Stories
Ghost Stories: Selected and Introduced by Mark Gatiss | E F Benson
8 posts | 4 read | 12 to read
Mark Gatiss (Sherlock, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones) selects and introduces chilling tales by the unsung master of the classic ghost story - E.F. Benson. There's nothing sinister about a London bus. Nothing supernatural could occur on a busy Tube platform. There's nothing terrifying about a little caterpillar. And a telephone, what could be scary about that? Don't be frightened of the dark corners of your room. Don't be alarmed by a sudden, inexplicable chill. There's no need for a ticking clock, a limping footstep, or a knock at the door to start you trembling. There's nothing to be scared of. Nothing at all.

I thought this was a beautiful line! 😍

“It was one of those golden days which every now and again leak out of paradise and drip to earth.”

❤️❤️❤️

I really enjoyed this collection!

Some stories were better than others; I found The Man Who Went Too Far tedious and boring but The Room In The Tower scared me witless! 😂

On the whole they were engaging and original 😊

Redwritinghood Those ghost fairy lights are awesome! 6y
LeahBergen I enjoyed this collection, too (even with TWO slug creature stories 😂😂). 6y

Okay, let‘s see what the author of (my much loved) Mapp and Lucia can do with a ghost story.

saresmoore Ooh, very interesting! 6y
rabbitprincess Ooh, selected and introduced by Mark Gatiss! Depending on your review I might have to hunt up a copy of this for my friend for Christmas. 6y
LeahBergen @batsy @saresmoore @rabbitprincess The first story was quirky and quite Bensonian in humour. I liked it! I know that there are a few coming up that are supposedly pretty scary, though. 6y

Who knew that the celebrated author of the Mapp and Lucia novels was also well-known in his day as a writer of spooky tales? I WOULD tag @shawnmooney in this post but he doesn‘t like ghost stories. 😉

PatriciaU The Room in the Tower scared the crap out of me the first time I read it! (edited) 7y
shawnmooney Nice try, though! 😍😍 7y
batsy Oh, nice! Are you reading it at the moment? (I'll stack it, but need to know if it gets the Leah approval 🤗) 7y
