The House You Pass On The Way
The House You Pass On The Way | Jacqueline Woodson
5 posts | 8 read | 10 to read
A lyrical coming-of-age story from a three-time Newbery Honor winning author Thirteen-year-old Staggerlee used to be called Evangeline, but she took on a fiercer name. She's always been different--set apart by the tragic deaths of her grandparents in an anti-civil rights bombing, by her parents' interracial marriage, and by her family's retreat from the world. This summer she has a new reason to feel set apart--her confused longing for her friend Hazel. When cousin Trout comes to stay, she gives Staggerlee a first glimpse of her possible future selves and the world beyond childhood.

Jacqueline Woodson writes the most simple, straightforward stories in beautiful language. I could never get tired of reading her.

1. I‘m going to list several faves - A Swiftly Tilting Planet, Watership Down, and The Dark Is Rising

2. Hahah reading! Always.

3. Anything that didn‘t involve reading, but probably the dishes.

4. All of my books aside, I had a little pegasus whom I called “Gaudior” (See 1a).

5. One of my faves, anyway.

wanderinglynn It is hard to pick just one when there are so many wonderful childhood books! Thanks for playing! 💜 6y

suzisteffen @TobeyTheScavengerMonk Silver on the Tree got me addicted to Welsh when I was a kid, and for the last almost three years, I‘ve been learning it on Duolingo. 😍 6y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk That‘s amazing. I memorized all the prophetic poems when I was in middle school, including the Welsh bits phonetically. Little did I know then that Welsh does not sound at all like it looks to American eyes! 6y
suzisteffen @TobeyTheScavengerMonk oooh! I did not memorize the poems! Might have to go back and read again! 6y

I‘m realizing I‘m a bit of a Woodson fan girl. Her writing is just so beautiful, observant, and sensitive. I can imagine some readers might criticize this story for the sexual orientation confusion of one of the characters, but IMHO, I don‘t believe it‘s warranted. They are adolescent girls discovering themselves, which we know isn‘t always clear or easy.

This is my third Jacqueline Woodson novel.
"And freedom? Oh freedom. Well that's just some people talking. Your prison is walking through this world all alone."
