A taut, thrilling adventure story about buried treasure, a manhunt, and a woman determined to make a new life for herself in the old west. It's the 19th century on the Gulf Coast, a time of opportunity and lawlessness. After escaping the Texas brothel where she'd been a virtual prisoner, Lucinda Carter heads for Middle Bayou to meet her lover, who has a plan to make them both rich, chasing rumors of a pirate's buried treasure. Meanwhile Nate Cannon, a young Texas policeman with a pure heart and a strong sense of justice, is on the hunt for a ruthless killer named McGill who has claimed the lives of men, women, and even children across the frontier. Who--if anyone--will survive when their paths finally cross? As Lucinda and Nate's stories converge, guns are drawn, debts are paid, and Kathleen Kent delivers an unforgettable portrait of a woman who will stop at nothing to make a new life for herself.

Pickpick

Wasn‘t sure about this one at first, wondering where it would connect, but loved it in the end. Sort of a western, and would actually love to see this as a movie. Amazing imagery when a horse nearly drowns after leaping from a ship into the Gulf. The best... I picked this up for 25¢ from a local used bookstore‘s clearance section and discovered it‘s signed when I was just about to the end... great find ❤️

My intro to western and it was entertaining but a little too predictable.

An epileptic prostitute, three lawmen, and a sadistic killer make a large swath through Texas and New Orleans before their tale is told.

Suet624 Wow! Quite the synopsis. 8y
Nebklvr @Suet624 A patron LOVED this book. It has it's moments, but I liked News of the World better. However, she reads a lot more of this genre than I do and I love when people are so excited about a book that they put it directly into your hands and say "Read this!" 8y
Suet624 Yes, I can imagine it nudges you toward the book. News of the World was just about perfect, wasn't it? 8y

Picked up in the sale bin at Barnes & Noble last Thursday. Halfway through and while it lightly holds my interest, I doubt I'll reread it, so it will be donated to the library.

AwdreyGore Looking for suggestions as my well has run dry. 8y

JenlovesJT47 How many of you just wander through the library and pick up books solely based on a pretty cover? *raises hand* ☺️ 8y

Some moments in this book are very interesting. In Kent's finest moments she is expounding upon death and spirituality, but I have found this to be fairly predictable and disappointing read. Should I hold out any hope for the last 30 pages?
